Microsoft's Big Games Gamble

How many people would want to play their iPod through their TV anyway? Let's not get too excited about a feature that is pretty pointless.

It is not pointless - I can see the 360 being used an awful lot as an iPod amp, the Nuon visualisation, the remote control and that it is already hooked up to a decent sound system most of the time means everyone can just bung their iPods and mp3 players and play their music at parties. This is a *huge* feature, its the first time something like this has been available without a PC involved.

Don't forget that Jeff Minters' Neon is built into the dash, great if you've got your massive TV hooked up to your h-fi. I'll probably get a 360 for Neon alone and it'll be convenient to use my iPod for the source tunes.

To me, spending £270 just for a hyped visualiser is psycho overkill.

"It's coded by jeff minter though!"

Great, that ups the value to... oh, it's still a visualiser.

Let's also not forget the Playstation had a visualiser for CDs. That came with it as well I think? On the demo disc. I remember the hype that had, everyone going on about how great it would be for parties. How many house parties do you go to a year? A handful? Most are rubbish, hardly any will bother with a setup like that. It's hardly a must.

Yeah, I have a decent setup as well, but why use the 360 as a middleman? My iPod goes straight into my Amp.

Big deal. With the exception of Nuon, all of that can be accomplished with a £3 lead.

I'd hardly say that was one of it's greatest features! Hardly any games supported it, for starters.. and copying CDs to the HDD was a pain in the arse.

What games are good for custom soundtracks anyway? The only one I found it worked well with was that golf game. Racing games are better with no sound, FPS games need their own music, same with most other story-driven games.

AND, it's not confirmed that you'll be able to copy stuff from iPod to Xbox360 anyway. I doubt you'll be able to do that directly to be honest.

This is the sort of site that might alow you to create your own custom faceplates: http://www.skinit.com

EDIT: In fact, they already do!

EDIT2: Or maybe not, seems this particular site only create vinyls for applying to the official products, they don't actually print them on.

A mate of mine imports xbox skins, I expect he'll be doing custom stuff for the 360

Using a remote to control the iPod from the other side of the room and still be able to see what you are playing? No.

Right, so iPod on your 360 is such an amazing feature because you can use a remote... or I mean you don't have to buy a remote for your iPod, but you do for your 360.

I can see why everyone's going on about it.... bloody exciting times.

Yeah, move on... maybe talk about how great being able to plug your camera in and view your photos on your TV instead of your PC. Another selling point!

Those Mums on the show were more down to Earth than some of you lot!

Hence why the fact that all games will now support it and now you can stream this music from your PC or iPod is such a great feature.

DYS

Just get a longer lead.  Seriously, iPod connectivity is such a non-feature I can't believe people are lapping it up.

No one is 'lapping it up' well I'm not anyway, I don't even have an iPod!

Any feature is a good feature though, I don't see why people are saying it means nothing.

When play Halo3 would you want to listen to your own music or in-game music?

Same with Kameo, same with Ninety-Nine Knights, Condemned, Perfect Dark, Gun, etc, etc... Custom soundtracks are only good for certain genres.

Pretty much all racing games, yeah.

I could see myself listening to my own music while deathmatching in Halo 3 or PDZ yeah, I do it with Halo 2 etc. now anyway. Except I have to use a seperate stereo.

But you don't need a 360 to plug an iPod into your speakers.

Well your not plugging it into your speakers are you, your plugging it into an amp and then running it through the amp and then into the speakers.

In one way it's quite good, I can pull the songs I want off the pod and then use them on the xbox as my sound track.

Very useful when you don't actually have the original disc to rip.
