Computer Use In Movies?

"This is Unix, I know this!" (Also in Linux flavour.)

Got to love the magical 'enhance' option in Hollywood's paint packages, too. The one that takes a 10 pixel smudge in the background of a photo and transforms it into a perfect still of the villain reflected in a whisky bottle or something. Even better is when they actually pan around something to show more of the scene. I blame Blade Runner. :)

Computers in TV and films always have stupid OTT interfaces, make a bleep noise whenever a key is pressed, have magical image enhancing software, have access to confidential databases that have easy to guess passwords etc etc. I don't see the point especially considering the amount of people that use computers now and know what they're like.

I like text-based computers that can identify a sinister word and make it flash on and off. Yet I've never liked the <blink> tag in HTML, which is odd.

I was watching the remake of The Fly the other night, and that's got a great computer with a jumbo-character display that parses natural language questions (text and speech) and uses words like 'negative' instead of 'no', which must eat up the presumably limited RAM. And also Scanners, where the computer operator has to type REQUEST: into the terminal before any command.

Let's not forget the Amigas in Neighbours, either, or CTU's decision to switch their systems from OSX to KDE. Imagine the transitionary period, that'd be high-class drama.

I love it when computers are used in TV to zoom into areas on an image/camera and magically the computer manages to turn the pixels into something with perfect resolution. "Zoom in again for more detail!". At least Blade Runner did it with a bit of believablility.

I love the Superman 2 bit where they're trying to shoot him with missiles and it turns all Atari. :)

Superman III, I think. On his approach to the cave with the super computer.
