More Than The Sum Of Their Parts

Having found Geist in the second hand bin the other day - and always being curious about it - I decided to take a chance and grab a copy. As the title says really, it's definitely more than the sum of it's parts. At it's heart is an average (if frequently satisfying) FPS with fairly straight forward puzzles littered throughout, all neatly wrapped up in the possession gimmick.

Whilst reports of poor graphics and shaky frame rates hold some truth, neither are anywhere near as bas as I'd been lead to believe, and whilst the linearity of the whole thing does undermine your possession skills, the whole thing is paced perfectly, keeping me playing far longer than I intended to. The possession trick often makes boss fights a lot more interesting, and is used to great effect at points.

So yes, I'd certainly hold Geist up as an example of average elements combining to make a good game.

If you are referring to the title of the game and not the title of the thread, then Gestalt is the word you are looking for. Otherwise carry on.

Althought it's 'its' and not 'it's' parts.

Ahem.

Got this the other day. Surprisingly enjoyable so far. Frame rate is a bit suspect in places, the FPS side of things is easy as pie, but it's fun possessing stuff and the like.

Did enjoy the bit in the women's shower. Just how did those soap suds stay in place?

So, yes, so far so decent.

But... if the parts belong to the game then surely it is "it's" and not "its". In this case the apostrophe relates to the 'belongs to' form rather than an abbreviation form (short for 'it is'). No?

It's logical to think that, but no.

English is odd.

I also got this the other day. Completely agree with the above. Its a great game and feels a lot like Second Sight to me.

See, I think it's more logical thinking the other way. Using an apostrophe to signify a contraction is totally unambiguous. You quite often get an 's' on the end of both the possessor and the possessed item which confuses me a bit.

Back on topic, I'm glad to hear folk actually like the game. I really fancied it but got put off by the bad reviews it got, even though I very rarely agree with reviews.

Don't be put off by the reviews, its a really good game. Just don't expect Half Life 2 and you won't be disappointed.

Second Sight. Good comparison. Highlight so far has been the first encounter with that grenade bloke. Seeing him start to lob a grenade, slip out of the person you're possessing, whip across, possess the grenade and then blow it up in your enemy's face was most satisfying.

Oh, that and possessing explosive boxes, blowing them up and watching guards fly in that ace slow motion effect when you're moving as the ghost.

a bit off topic, P.N.03 was a lot more than the sum of its parts!

High five!

Its parts are, at first glance, dodgy controls and blank envirnoments full of enemies with limited attack patterns. Plus a wiggly-assed herione with smart bombs.

It comes together really, really well.
