So who's basing their launch purchases on live functionality? Or are you all going to be hermits locked away in your castles with your HD-TV's playing on your lonesome?

I don't even know if I'm going to get a game yet. Maybe Perfect Dark. I'm more interested in streaming HD movies from my PC.

You have a 'media centre' PC? Just discovered today (thanks to a thread in ATF) that you can't do that with regular old XP. :o

I have indeed but a long DVI and optical cable is a bit too much to spend when the 360 will do it all for me.

Although normal XP people can just get this official program and stream some media. Obviously no one knows if it's 360 compatible yet but it should be.

I was under the impression that there's a win xp update in the pipeline that'll give it media centre-esque properties.

EDIT: But I could be talking out my arse. These media centre PC's then - does 360 connectivity depend on hardware or software?

Despite the doomsayers I'll be repeating the big mistake of getting a 360 on launch. Simply because it would be torture to see those who I play regularly on my friends list playing one while I sat without. For all those who say the games aren't good/original/next gen enough I say so fuck. It'll sort itself out in time and it won't be going away . Remember there were those claiming adamantly that the original had such a bad launch that Bill was gonna cut his losses and kill it off within a month in Europe. When the first came out things got very ugly on the Edge forum between those who had one and those who didn't. It'll be the same this time, I don't think anyone can deny that it is being rushed out the door too early but if it takes a year for the real next generation games to start coming through I'll have spent a year playing Gotham 3 and Perfect Dark. Remember kids, Uncle Bill loves you, Uncle Bill bought you Rare.

A hard drive, a wireless controller, a live headset...

And I dare say some functionality in games, based on the fact FFXI won't work without one. Maybe not your bag, but I bet the same will apply to all 360 MMORPG's.

I preordered one with Amazon on day one so I'm hoping I'll be getting one on or before launch. What games though is anyones guess. I have no idea what's going to be released but I've preordered PD0 and PGR3 for good measure. £400 spent. Yowsers.

I preordered with Play on August 18th along with a bunch of peripherals and games, and they haven't sent me one of those "don't count on it" emails. This either means that I'm guranteed one, or that they've forgotten about me. :P
