Stone Roses

It's a good show mate. He's got a great band, and he was in a happy mood last night. Does the odd Stone Roses number if you're interested. Pretty blokey audience - very similar to New Order ones back in the day with lots of lads in stone island shouting footie chants - but more kids in their twenties than the Happy Mondays gig I went to the other month where I was one of the youngest there! And I'm 33.

I really can't get into the debut album. I Am The Resurrection is immense and there's some other good stuff on there but on the whole I just can't get excited about it. I don't like any of the first five songs except I Wanna Be Adored, which is weird, cos they seem to be the ones that get all the praise.

When I was 16 or 17 I loved the Roses (even liked the Second Coming, Begging You, Drivin South and How Do You Sleep were ace). That was about the time I started DJing.

In the 10 years since then I have been asked for I Am The (Sodding) Ressurection at least 5 times a night, every weekend. Usually by the same drunken lads in Reni hats.

I now despise them, not so much for their music, but for the fact that people just won't MOVE ON!

At the end of the day they were a pretty good indie band, I truly don't get the adulation that is STILL afforded to them nearly 20 years on. Blur have a far superior body of work and no fucker ever requests them, let alone holds them in such esteem.

Can you play 'There's no other way' by Blur, mate?

That album still gives me shivers when it starts. Awesome.

Mental, one of the finest drum riffs ever.

Yeah.. it wasn't theirs though was it eh?

Still - never hugely been a fan of the Stone Roses, but back in '89 whenever that track was dropped at a club, ravers, indies kids... everyone used to go mental to it. A landmark record, no doubt.

Well I will be :)

Although I am getting it from Zavvi for a bit less than that.

Yeah, I'm tempted as well. How much at Zavvi?

I was 16 in 1989. I remember that I wasn't really into The Stone Roses, "The Stone Roses" at first. Took me a while to get into it. Then when it clicked - Amazing.

I missed seeing them in 1989 at the Birmingham Irish Centre as I had my English GCSE the next day.

Then I moved to the States and never did see them. :(

The day before I left for the States She Bangs the Drums was released and I bought it on 10". :hat:

Zavvi have it for £79.95

The Stone Roses at Zavvi

And they gave me £4.79 Quidco as well so it's a bit more reasonable.

I bought The Stone Roses on tape (!) the day it came out. All of my friends were into US indie bands such as Dinosaur Jnr and Sonic Youth so they sneered at me buying this 'twee' English album. By the end of the year they all had a copy of it.

:eyebrows:

That was me (in part). 1989 for me was all about Technique by New Order though!

I has a copy on tape as well.

Was it a rip from some other group, then?

It's not just a great drum riff, but a great riff full stop: drum, bass and guitar combine into something amazing.

The dance-oriented song showcased the rhythm section of Mani on bass and Reni on percussion. John Squire also shone on guitar with its various wah-wah pedal effects. Finally, Ian Brown sang the vocals in a unique whispered delivery. He would also perform with this technique for the track "Something's Burning". The bassline was "inspired" by "Know How" by Young MC, which is a sample from the Shaft theme song, performed by Isaac Hayes. The lyrics reference Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and the Marquis de Sade.

The drum track, though played by Reni, was recorded as he played in time to a sample of Bobby Byrd's rendition of "Hot Pants" at the insistence of John, angering the drummer at the apparent lack of belief in his talent. This was later said to have contributed to Reni leaving the band.

Hmmm. The actual 'Know How' main sample is from the Shaft theme, but the bassline that underpins it (which Fools Gold kind of uses) is the Dust Brother's own.

Sound about right?

The more I think about the 20th Anniversary Collectors' edition the more frustrated I get. I would really like the remastered album and the remastered singles, AA- and B-sides. I'm really not bothered about the demos.

I don't want the DVD, the vinyl or a lemon shaped USB stick!

But the Collectors' edition is the only way to get the remastered singles, AA- and B-sides. The Legacy Edition has the demos. :(

My collectors edition turned up today and my god it's a big box. Only downer is that the four CDs aren't that secure in the stupid little holders and mine fell out. No damage done though thankfully so no need to send it back.

The remastered album sounds...ok. I can't hear that much difference from the last anniversary edition and I have been playing that far too much over the last 10 years.

The extras are nice but the USB lemon thingy is pretty cheap feeling.

Going to spend the rest of the day submersing myself in all the demos and b-sides

After listening to it for a second time 'This is the one' does sound much better. Especially Squire's guitar parts.

Hmmm really want the remastered B sides* but there is no way to get them without buying the collectors' edition. the collectors' edition makes the But my god the price! Yeah you get a lot of stuff but I don't want or need the vinyl or the lemon. The Beatles remasters seem like really good value compared to this. :)

*(And would quite like the remastered album. I couldn't give a fig about the demos unless someone tells me they are really good.)

The demos are pretty bad to be honest. Nothing to write home about.

I'm guessing that you probably want the CD or high quality downloads, but you can buy the B sides separately on iTunes (and they include the 12" remixes of Elephant Stone and One Love yay). You can also exclude the backwards nonsense of Full Fathom Five, Simone and that other one. Happy days.

I expected as much.

Hmmm this is useful, thanks.

I do want the CD but downloads might tide me over until they are released in a less silly package.

However I don't use itunes. Can I get the B sides in a non-Apple format via iTunes?

I don't think you can. You can get them on Amazon in 256kbps MP3 format for 69p per track though.

Also - the Blackpool 1989 gig is on BBC4 tonight at 12.30.

Listening to those B sides and 12" mixes reminds me why I ended up buying the single of One Love - the long version is John Squire cocaine fuelled indulgent noodling that seems to go on forever...
