Billy Brown
It seems that publishers are wise to poker's increasing popularity. Poker Player is the first in on the act, and the first issue is just £1. I picked it up on the way to Thush's live game at the weekend but I've only had the chance to have a quick flick through thus far. At first glance it seems a bit 'laddish', but when you get to the meat of the magazine it seems quite worthy: an interview with Devilfish (and, er, Stephen Hendry), a basic strategy guide for beginners, an in-depth look at heads-up tactics, poker etiquette, a Hellmuth column, etc. It's only 68 pages, but there seems to be enough there to be worthy of your pound the first time around. I'll report back when I've managed a proper look, but I'd be interested to hear what your opinions are if you've picked it up.

Some fine sections on strategy and advice (mostly aimed at beginners like me) and even diagrams showing you how to do the chip shuffle! I'd have already put my sub in if the weblink didn't take you to the wrong magazine! If you subscribe you get 12 issues for £5. Serious bargain. Sideshow
How do I do that? ← Hold on, I think you get a years free subscription to this if you sign up with one of the IPN poker sites. I'll check when I get home tonight.

Chris303
Picked up a copy of this today...not really had a chance to read it yet though, so this is a bit of a wasted post ← There was a leaflet in Insiders Edge (general gambling mag) giving three issues free. No sign ups or catch, just ask for it basically.
Stifler
The same offer seems to be available on Sky. Challenge are always showing the Ad when they show poker games in the evening, and apparently pressing red will let you get 3 free. Shame it doesn't work on NTL I've had a bit more of a read of it now though, and I'm quite enjoying it...well worth a quid. Think I'll sign up for a years sub for a fiver...can't really go too wrong with that

I can see it either taking off in a big way or bombing rapidly. Hopefully Dennis are big enough to bankroll it if needs be.
davweb
I also saw a magazine called Flush which was also 99p and I thought "It's less that a quid - how bad can it be?" Answer: fucking terrible. I can only assume it was thrown together in a hurry to be a spoiler for Poker Player; the fact that there's no subscription information in there seems to confirm this. (Edit - reading the website it seems their plan may be to give it away free in airport loungues and hotels.) Avoid. jonamok
Just read through the second issue of Poker Player (Phil Hell-mouth cover). Again it's fantastic value for money (£1.50). All the rllmuk players really should be reading this - especially as the mag is throwing free 3 month subs around like confetti. It's a quick light read, generally entertaining and often informative. Mr Spew
There's an online link somewhere to get 3 free issues of this, got the £1.50 issue (2?) and it's quite fun to read.
Stifler
Yeah, I really enjoyed the second issue too. A fiver for a years worth is certainly a bargain Hopefully enough people will read it for it to keep going.
furq
The editor used to edit PC Zone, no? Some of the writers are the same.

jonamok
Another solid issue of pokerplayer. Interview with Ivey was okay and plenty of other info and amusing articles in the mag. Liked the piece on the history of the playing card, too. It's a quick read but it costs next to nowt. Well worth a sub.
michael
I think this month's issue could possibly be free (I've subscribed, but at a fiver for a year, I'm not complaining) - I'll have a look in Smiths when I'm in town next. But anyhow, another good read - perfect for vacant 10 minute spaces in your day!
