Crackdown

Found something odd. Couldn't access area 2 in the agency - it said I wasn't prepared or something, but it would let me in area 3.

Still, no matter. I think I was trying the hardest enemies too soon because Volk are more of a match and all the supply points are easier to get to.

A couple of things are getting on my nerves though. The enemies respawning is the first one. I just had to climb my way to the top of a quarry to kill someone and by the time I'd made my way across the flat at the bottom, the enemies I'd killed first had respawned and were following me. Same with another area. As I'm making my way up a flight of stairs, enemies are walking up behind me and getting "in position" on the floor above as I take out the enemies already there.

Also, the amount of enemies on the streets between missions is getting ridiculous. All it takes is a group of about five and for me to get stuck behind a skip and I'm dead.

When you're still a 10-stone weakling that has trouble jumping over a bin you do have to be much more cautious in the game, it's a lot more nip-tuck, picking off a few bad guys and then running off to recover.

I don't recall the respawning ever being an issue either. There's definitely a set number of bad guys surrounding each main boss, as you can see their numbers dwindling as you pick them off, they were probably just hiding somewhere you hadn't spotted. That said, I think until you've completely cleared an area of bosses the general bad guys will continue to appear in the streets.

Just keep searching for those green orbs, and take as many opportunities as you can to get close up to use hand-to-hand combat, which will really increase your strength.

Don't get stuck behind a skip. Pick up the skip and throw it at them.

This really is the game that keeps on giving ^_^

I started playing this again the other day after I was left bitterly disappointed by Crackdown 2, and I've already put a good ten hours into it since then. I finished it a long time ago, of course, but I took some time to go through the bosses again, fully level up my agent (it was just the driving skill that I had left), mop up a few achievements here and there, and I finally found that last fucking agility orb :D

Last night I spent a couple of hours in the buggy, doing massive jumps and tricks, with a huge grin on my face the whole time. Today I've been messing around with the Agency vehicles with my 4-star agent, and the morphing cars are a bloody excellent little feature. I can see why people were pissed it was left out of the sequel; it makes the standard car look like the fucking Bat Mobile.

A brilliant, brilliant game, and quite possibly my favourite of this generation. It's certainly one of the most fun games I've ever played. And I'm still playing it.

I've got an old build of Crackdown on a dev box at home dated around 2005. There a couple of neat features in it. One of which, you can change it into a first person mode and go to town jumping around the city like a madman from your agents point of view.

For anyone interested in playing such a mode: there's a mod for the PC version of Saints Row 4 which does the exact same thing in a game that is remarkably like Crackdown :)

Blast from the past! I dug out my old testbox and got crackdown up and running. It's a build from December 2005, with many internal references to a build from January 2004 known as Car Wars.

You could put it in first person mode which was fun. One island isn't finished yet, and much of the game is un textured. It's also horribly un-optomised. Constantly crashing:

my save is lost so I need to start fresh, going to try and stay away from the blue ones until I have the agility needed to reach them all in one pass

some handy maps on resetera for that purpose

Here's some more footage.

2015 post and all but I spun up my 360 Dev kit with an old build of Crackdown on it 2 weeks back.

Didn't play it much as it runs like a dog. Your one looks much more complete I think.

Loved the game, such a great fun world which had some amazing design considering you could essentially come at most bits from anywhere including jumping / above.

This is my favourite open world game ever.... Love the freedom of the game and the power-up nature of the main character. It feels like a playground to have fun in. Actually like the fact there was no story too it or missions as such. It was quite refreshing at the time. I remember collecting every single one of those agility orbs too... quite enjoyed the challenge! Looking forward to the third instalment when it happens... I know it has been over-hyped somewhat so my expectations are not set high for it. Just a souped up version of the original would do me.... :)

A lot of the early backwards compatibility 3d games don't really stand up well to today's audio/visual feasts. Crackdown in some bizarre way does, simply because of that playground feel and the addition of resolution. Jumping about and firing rocket launchers into stacks of explosives, simply to improve skills so that you can jump around more and fire rocket launchers into larger stacks of explosives, is such a nice core loop.

Think its the cartoon art style of the game too!

Possibly, though in higher resolution the effect is lost quite a lot.

youre never going to mistake it for a current gen game, or even one that wasn’t released early in the 360’s life, but it’s different enough to play from all of the sad, “realistic”, open world games that it stands out
