    The iOS gaming thread

    It seems there is not much discussion here about iPhone games so in a similar style to the PS3 owners thread, we find ourselves reading one right now. With the exception of Rolando and Bejeweled 2 the game I've played most on mine is Cube Runner. This is not only free but perfectly suits the 'few minutes spare' situation that presents itself so often. Basically you just tilt the phone to move your ship, get high scores and avoid shit. Simple graphics and gameplay, great game.

    iOS https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1053012308?mt=8 Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.supercell.clashroyale So I realise that these kind of games are the antithesis of rllmuk but the new game from Boom Beach and Clash of Clans devs (Supercell) came out of soft launch yesterday, called Clash Royale. Yes its fremium and yes I suspect you can buy your way to glory but the basic game seems very open and keeps the irritation of timers and cool downs to a minimum, you can seemingly keep playing as long as you want for free, with a constant stream of 'stuff' coming your way. Game itself is a nice mix of a deck builder style card game, which you then take into single screen arenas and pit against your online enemy in nicely played out battles - the aim being to take out their 3 castles before you lose yours. It looks a very well crafted realtime accesible strategy game and the battles last a max of only a few mins. I read about these guys in Wired, they are creaming in the cash but have an interesting approach to ftp - they claim IAPs should never be driven to remove frustration in the player, but to provide fun or joy. I'm not usually into these things, their previous 2 games passed me by, but I'm giving this one a good crack and enjoying it, the lack of timers as such means its perfect pick up and play fodder for those moments in the work loo, bus, train etc Clan Info rllmuk (50/50) - currently full, I will post when space is available. ugvm (30/50) - open membership Da Clan #20VGJJP (4/50) - open membership

    I fancy playing a card game on my iPad. I'm not a huge fan of hearthstone (It's fine but I fell off WoW hard) and I'm quite liking what I've played of Elder Scrolls Legends. What do people recommend? Are there any good Yu-gi-oh games? Anything more obscure I might not have heard of?

As an aside, I'm happy that Rhythm Doctor is becoming a full game - I S-ranked everything in the web version and enjoyed it enough to throw a donation at the maker I was expecting a Labo cover story and exclusive blowout considering their luxury of monthly issues, but I'm guessing they need time to get facts and publish a good story rather than the mad hype that's going around the internet?
  9. The basics of The Snack World TreJarers are to find rare items slumbering deep inside dungeons. The main game cycle is going back and forth between the base and dungeons to proceed through the game. You prepare equipment and items at the base before going to a dungeon. Then at the dungeon, you’ll try to find rare items slumbering deep within. Featured in The Snack World are random dungeons where the layout changes each time the player enters. The type of dungeons vary, including a rocky area, forest, and temple. Scary bosses lie deep inside the dungeons such as the Kraken. Other charming monsters are introduced, which are Buttery, Scorpion, Yeti, Mermaid, Penguin Knight, Mimic, Merman and Clone. Selecting Jara, which is the term for weapon here, is very important. Different Jaras should be prepared to be ready for a variety of monsters which have different affinities against Jaras. Jaras and Snacks can be scanned which will give benefits. Jaras are very important items in The Snack World. They are normally miniaturized while being carried, but can be increased in size during attacks. Snacks are crystal plates that contain sealed monsters and characters. A limited Jara: Crystal Sword Alpha will be available in limited amounts of early game copies. Up to six Jara items can be carried at once. The Jaras can also be freely assembled. Snacks allows summoning of monsters and characters, so you should collect them to go on an adventure with yout favorite characters. Benefits of scanning a Jara toy include activating unique skills that will aid in quests, obtaining items that strengthen weapons, and unlocking special quests. Meanwhile, by scanning Snacks, you can obtain Chap’s bandanna and unlock quests related to Piggy. Each piece of the Jara equipment is grouped under brand names. The currently known ones are: Fairy Electronics, Clanarine, Britannia Enchant and Peffany. Players can enjoy their own way of collecting branded items, whether focusing on their favorite brands or combining from various brands. It's a F2P collectable "card game" with IAP that you click things a lot and then watch some cards march up a screen and lightsabre other cards in the face. It's mindless and will annoy the living piss out of most people. But Zok and I like it which automatically makes it an Edge 6. Zok's too chicken to make a thread but I'm crazy like a fox baby. The UI is a mess. The graphics are borderline appalling but it fills that need in me to click things while I'm at work. I suspect Broker will hate it but that's cool. People are different yo.   12. Thought I would create a not just iOS centric thread. Today Splendor on iOS and android has been updated with online multiplayer. Haven't bought a copy either physically or digitally yet, but do hope the digital version has local wifi play like the excellent Ticket to Ride.

    Lineage 2 - Revolution

    Bit of an odd one this. A full and complete F2P mmo that looks really nice, is insanely complicated and packed with systems, has plenty of f2p bullshit but is surprisingly kind on your time. http://l2.netmarble.com/en It's a mmo with full controls. Played isometric. You run around and hit things with your weapon and powers doing basic fetch and kill quests for idiots following a terrible plot. You have full control of your character and indeed that's the most efficient way to play. However. If you want to treat it as a more hands off experience you can set the game to auto quest. You need to interact to kick off quests and collect rewards but otherwise your character will head off and kill orcs all by themselves. They can be even set to grind mobs in a specific area if that's your fetish. Over the levels I've played so far (15) it's introduced me to many, many systems, daily dungeons, tower of insolence, forging, runes and god knows what else. Playing in auto mode it's surprisingly mellow. There's 269 levels so I'm guessing the wall will come at some point but for now it's a nice free distractions.

  20. To any indies that have released an iOS or Android game, have you got any advice or stories about your experiences? I'm about 3 months away from release of my indie sports title T20 Card Cricket which has been a struggle as I've worked on it part time for the last 2.5 years, had a baby a few months ago and had a licensing deal appear and fall through within a five month period. Not only that, my coder tore of part of his thumb in a mountain-biking accident, and one of my artists started going blind but although I say it every year, this time it really looks like the finish line is in sight. If you feel like sharing your experiences, how you got noticed, download numbers, mistakes you made, soft launches, monetisation strategy, I'd love to hear them. Also, if you have any advice/theories that go against the conventional wisdom that you read on Gamasutra and other development sites, I'd love to hear that too. I'm of the opinion that to get noticed you have to do things differently. As T20CC is quite niche (cricket x puzzle), I'm thinking of approaching sports writers and the games/sports section of publications rather than the traditional games press (I don't see a lot of crossover between cricket followers and traditional gaming press). Not that I'd compare T20CC to the mighty New Star Soccer, but I think getting featured in sporting publications of non-gaming press was a big part of its success (feel free to correct me, SiRead). Right now, as I wait for the next build, I'm cutting my trailer and looking to get that out in the next few weeks. I'm of the opinion that mobile games don't need the months and months of lead-in marketing that say Steam or console games require as the attention span of mobile gamers is very much 'can I download this now?' Put a link to your game site if you can. I'd like to check how you did your trailers and website as well. (mods - I put this in here instead of development for visibility purposes)

    Golf Clash (iOS)

    Golf Clash (featured in App Store this week) is an interesting game, its a 1v1 online golf game in a nice cartoony setting (think everybody golf without the players visible) but its a lock stock ripoff of the structure of Clash Royale (something they not really hiding with the name) For the match they've gone for alternate play, I suspect to build some limited tension if your opponent plays well/badly, rather than simultaneously hitting your shots, which would speed it up a bit. You unlock chests for winning, which upgrade your clubs, and then you select a bag/hand from the cards you obtain (sound familiar ?) Plays pretty nicely though and can see this being on the phone for a while.
