  1. I posted about these polls last year, in the good cover songs thread, and some might already be aware of them. But I think it's worth giving them their own thread, because they're fun (if occasionally frustrating!), and have introduced me to a hell of a lot of unfamiliar music... For the last year, Tom Ewing (who does the Popular blog writing about every UK number one single) has been organising a series of monthly music tournaments on Twitter. Description here: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/the-peoples-pop-polls/ Copied from there, the previous themes and winners: Everything that's got into the last 8 (and is therefore disqualified from future polls): The March 2021 poll was for The Year 2008, and the result was... "American Boy" by Estelle ft Kanye West beat "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" by Beyoncé, by 393 votes to 352. The current poll theme for April is The World Cup of Placename Songs (aka Around The World In 384 Songs). This is the Twitter thread containing the matches that finish today... If you hurry up and start now, you should just about have time to listen to the tracks in Qualifier 9 (including the 19-minute Isaac Hayes track!) before the poll closes!
