  1. SO according to Indie Retro News someone is taking on the massive project of porting Eye of the Beholder to the C64. So you're probably thinking it will be some sort of Bard's Tale hack yes? Wrong. http://www.indieretronews.com/2018/05/eye-of-beholder-dungeon-crawling.html How good does that look? More (including a video) at the link.
  2. Back in the early days Coleco converted loads of unknown arcade games to their home console. Some like Donkey Kong would go on to be classics and widely ported, others have disappeared. One of my friends had a Coleco and one of those obscure ports was a dungeon crawler called Venture. Each level would start with a map of four rooms and you represented as a pixel. The challenge being that you had to get to a room without getting hit by a monster. Inside each room you had to get the treasure and leave without getting killed It was like a mini version of Beserk. I loved this and ended up getting this for my 2600. It was a surprisingly decent port. But then everyone forgot about it. Apart from one man Donnie Russell who has mad a port you can grab from here! https://sites.google.com/site/donnierussellii/my-c64-games It's pretty zippy and much more like the arcade/Coleco ports. Worth trying if like me you're one of the three people who remember this.
  3. Another one bought to my attenion by the wonderful Indie Retro News. http://www.indieretronews.com/2018/06/bub-and-bob-return-home-to-c64-puzzle.html#more Just have a look
  4. Indie Retro News highlighted this delight today. http://www.indieretronews.com/2022/02/tutankham-c64-port-of-tutankham-arcade.html#more https://lowcarb.itch.io/tutankham-c64 I would have loved this back in the day and playing it now reveals a pretty bang on port!
  5. This looks pretty cracking. http://www.indieretronews.com/2017/04/limbo-c64-modern-indie-game-as-work-in_21.html
  6. Another 2600 to C64 port has arrived! http://www.indieretronews.com/2021/12/sequest-1983-atari-2600-game-arrives-on.html This is one of my favourite 2600 games and while it loses some of the vivid colour from the original (due to the different methods both machines create the screen) and feeling a little different it's about as good a port as could be done. It even keeps the little tricks like being able to halt the oxygen meter by peeking just above the surface with the sub's tower. Download here https://h4plo.itch.io/seaquest (Original below for comparison.)
  7. Supremacy on the C64 was an impressive port back in 1991. All the more impressive as a single load game. Now a group of coders are looking to make a new version with all the missing bits of the Amiga version for disk and flash carts.
  8. More details here. https://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/popeye-v1/ Comparison. The prototype The released version
  9. Galaga has been ported to the C64 by Arlasoft. You can download it here https://arlagames.itch.io/galaga-c64? This is one of those games that missed out being ported to the C64 (it's successor Gaplus being the closest the C64 got during its commercial lifespan.) It's a pretty solid port!
  10. Many of you will know I wrote The Commodore 64 Book 1982-199x. Today I have announced a new website - c64books.co.uk For the first time, my C64 Book will be available officially as an eBook, with updates to text and design. Plus.. I can reveal work has started on the sequel, The Commodore 64 Book 199x-2022 with over 200 reviews of games released between 1992 and 2022. This will be published in August 2022, marking the 40th anniversary of the Commodore 64. Plus there are other projects in the works. Sign up to the mailing list to hear more, and watch the trailer:
  11. From For someone who was a fan of the first game I can't wait to see if they finish this one and what they do with it.
  12. I haven't tried it yet but someone has ported Spider Fighter (2600) to the C64. Download page here https://h4plo.itch.io/spider-fighter Video of it in action
  13. https://sarahjaneavory.itch.io/zeta-wing Well, Sarah Jane Avory made a huge impression in 2019 with Neutron (and the funny Christmas-skinned revamp Santron). Now she's back with Zeta Wing, a gorgeous and incredible vertically scrolling shoot 'em up inspired by arcade game Gemini Wing. (Sarah actually ported the Atari ST version to Amiga, and was always disappointed she had no time to make use of the Amiga's superior hardware) Earth has been overrun by mutant creatures, so strap into your fighter and blast off to get rid of the infestation for good! Destroying a complete attack wave drops a P token, and collecting 12 increases your shot strength by one level. Dying drops it back one level but does not drain your power gauge. - Three difficulty levels and autofire option (hold fire) - Seven huge stages - Giant end of level bosses - Parallax scrolling layers - Simultaneous sound FX and music - PAL and NTSC compatible Trailer here:
  14. It's finally out. http://www.indieretronews.com/2017/12/luftrauserz-paul-kollers-magnum-opus.html#more More at the link and it looks lovely. It can be bought here in cart form http://rgcd.bigcartel.com/ and here in digital form https://rgcddev.itch.io/luftrauserz
  15. I don't think we've had a thread on this old game. I remember loving this back in the day despite it being something David Crane cobbled together in six weeks from his Car Wars prototype. Came across a video tonight that talks about how the account generator worked in such a way to create a "save" system with no onboard saving.
  16. This is amazing. https://www.gamesthatwerent.com/2020/05/joust-c64-found/ edit. The whole story can be found at https://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/joust/
  17. Some incoming news from http://www.indieretronews.com/2018/10/alien-8-ultimate-play-game-classic-is.html#more edit Video below from earlier attempt at a port. Cheers @Gregory Wolfe for the heads up
  18. http://www.indieretronews.com/2020/05/marios-cement-factory-c64-port-coming.html#more From the creator More at the link but a bit of a fool's errand as the C64 doesn't have a display good enough to.... Woah. This looks really good and as close to the art of the original that you might hope to get on an 8-bit.
  19. So someone is developing a Unity style environment for the C64 / Apple 2 / Atari XL / Atari Lynx and has released footage of a Goblins style demo for it. More here http://8bit-unity.com/?page_id=34 Here's a shot of Grubs. (A worms clone.)
  20. The C64 port of Fix It Felix Jr is out and can be downloaded here https://brokenbytes.itch.io/fix-it-felix-jr Alerted by the always amazing Indie Retro News http://www.indieretronews.com/2020/04/fix-it-felix-jr-for-c64-out-now.html
