  1. There are very big jumps as you increase both CPU and graphics card speed. Indeed, overclocking my Graphics card by a mere couple of % adds 300 or so.

The layout helped - but allowing extended bits of text on (around) gaming that take longer than ten seconds to read, without too many references to birds, tits and beer (the "look-we're-old-enough-to-enter-a-pub" pieces in Zone annoy) - is worth its wait in gold. This doesn't come out in the adverts. And definitely won't come out from reading the puff-piece on Gamesradar. Simply compare what Kieron gains from approaching the Planescape article in the way he does to any of the retro-reviews in Edge (before they were, imo, wisely scrapped) or (for example) the I-Robot piece in the last issue of GamesTM - which is almost all about the *mechanics* and not the experience. The fact there aren't that many Torments however... And six pages on Zangband? That I really didn't expect

Keep reading. Be sure to look at the title of the topic whilst reading the posts. Besides, we're like a pack of wolves when we sense blood. That's what joining a group mind does to you.

And if you get your combination of parts wrong, you'll suffer a performance penalty. Kind of like The Sims. But with goths / mechas.

Encouraged by K.Gillen's blog post, I picked this up this morning. The later parts of the magazine's extra life section ( which takes up about half the mag, in this issue - which means it's not all previews and reviews ) contain stuff that's *actually worth reading*. [ And actually, what I'd have liked to have seen Games TM do in a multi-format context ]. I haven't got an opinion on any of the reviews because... I haven't read them And seeing as it's a PC mag, I don't suppose there will be too many mecha titles in there to worry about. I don't suppose anyone else has picked the magazine up?

Prove it - I've been wholly persuaded by Cacky's unanswerable "argument" that if it looks vaguely metallic it's a mech game. I somehow doubt that the background story to Speedball was sufficiently developed to rule it out* (Actually, having said that, some of those cars in Gran Turismo 4 surely have fairly sophisticated engine management computers in reality - and they're made of metal - so... Gran Turismo 4 is a mech game! You heard it here first, people.) -- * In this alternate reality, the ambulance is purely a sop to keep the masses entertained - they'd get nowhere near as much fun unless they thought they heard bones breaking.** ** This is all getting extremely surreal when you substitute gamers for masses, and consider that we're talking about bundles of pixels ffs.

Particularly since the definition of "Peers" is any game with a robot (or robot looking) suit in Cacky's world. How does Armored Core stack up against Speedball 2?

Damn. You've just sold me another copy of GamesTM
  9. (i) Measuring "benchmark" - download 3DMark03 from Futuremark. Run it. Write down the number. (ii) Updated drivers fix bug issues, and can do useful things like optimise the way the drivers do things (eg. display shaders, draw triangles etc.) Sometimes you'll get a "free" increase in performance by upgrading your drivers. Sometimes you'll get a drop in performance (which is why we're quoting benchmarks - though you should really take an average of your results, which I can't be bothered to do). ATI also add different features to their drivers every now and again. Eg. sometime in the last three or four driver revisions they added the ability for the screen display to be rotated (like Nvidia have had for at least a year) which is probably useful in some situation...
  10. Why do you think the XBox is fundamentally more difficult to program than the GBA?
  11. My 3dmark03 run before was 4850. And after was 5050. But I'm fairly lax with my benchmarking and can't be bothered with repeats or the like. (Athlon 2800XP, 1 Gig Ram, Radeon 9700 Pro - all at stock).

What Cacky's trying to say, but bumbling by getting it completely the wrong way around is: In the UK we're all out for ourselves - the cult of the individual is such that we're actually not individuals at all, we're just some kind of evil grasping group monster. Society is subservient to the Individual - and so there's no such thing as an individual in that society. In Japan there's a much more defined role for "society". And so "true" individuality can flourish *within* that society. --- Of course, that's all just a load of bollocks - I didn't use the word penis enough for a start. But hey, if an EA test monkey (penis?) can write (penile) rubbish - I'm sure I'm perfectly capable of mimicing it in my patronising (phallocentric) middlecore (only half-erect dicks?) way. [edit. I should have mentioned Artificial Intelligence a few times too - I'm sure we've had a "world expert" post somewhere on this board today.. ]

Yes - but perhaps Cacky can't determine what's jest and what's not? Suddenly it all becomes clear.

Just posting on Japanese forums would do me.

Individualism? Japan? The telling phrase there was "if it exists at all."
  16. The helicopter was going to Balmoral to pick them up. I'd have let them freeze.

the act of making a game makes you more knowledgeable about games in general? ever heard of getting too close to a subject? being nice to people works well if you're capable of it....

    Ban Request. Seriously.
  19. And the chimney hasn't been covered in snow because (I also didn't quite get why the room didn't fill with smoke)? Besides, the downdraft would surely put the fire out - your standard chimney/fire arrangement has air coming in the bottom and going *up* the chimney.
  20. It's the way he runs AND has perfect grip on the floor. My "favourite" faux-pas would be... They're in a room. The outside is sealed off behind a solid wall of ice (we're quite definite that there's no way in for the "real" cold. They're burning a fire. Where's the oxygen coming from?
  21. Just awful. I think that just about every single plot detail was wrong. But, just to pick one scene from the movie: The weather centre where they're watching the buoys. (i) Why does the machine beep when a buoy drops by 13 degrees? Who coded it? (ii) What kind of scientist buys a brand new keyboard to attach to a monitoring PC? (iii) The football tv "commentary". "We're rejoining the game in the 67th minute of the second half". and so on.

    Poole's article cracked me up.
  23. Given that eurogamer will accept direct links, and provide a service in return for you seeing their non-obtrusive advertising - is there any reason why the *whole* article is quoted here, and no mention of the author made?
  24. It so obviously won't be shit. You're talking 70000 people pretty much word perfect on a whole bunch of songs...
