  1. Yes, the bias cultivated isn’t the cartoonishly brazen variety (usually). Make no mistake it’s an apparatus that empirically works. As Mike said, these budgets set aside aren’t an act of charity. As implied by Alex and Darren there are practical difficulties to impartiality (due to the current socioeconomic setup) with potential consequences to access etc. It’s particularly striking with companies like Apple. DF to me seem more impartial than most, there’s a sense they genuinely strive for it and I love their output. We just can’t ignore the fact that no one is impervious to unconscious, engineered, influence and despite the difficulties peeling away all corporate lobbying it should still be the aim.
  2. That’s not the expectation. Yes I am intimately involved in this kind of thing professionally. Not that it matters.
  3. Yes. Sure partial ethics has its advantages but it’s not a particularly lofty goal.
  4. Unfortunately true. I did say “in many places”. And even in hospitals/wards where they still allow this practice it’s been massively scaled back, limits etc. Of course there should be none at all.
  5. I generally like DF’s output. Let’s not be naive though, both MS and Sony will be looking to inject bias at every single turn, especially in popular/influential outlets like DF. Corporate lobbying isn’t always ham-fisted bags of cash. In this case simply having their travel and accommodation paid for by MS is a competing interest. There’s a reason this kind of practice was eradicated in many places in eg the medical/pharma industry, where factual veracity matters a bit more.

Fuck that. Tempted by the hardware but no chance in hell. I hope someone else takes the lead in investing in VR.
  7. Was enjoying everything about that except for the thread moaners! Just because it wasn’t put through a LexisNexis deep search and didn’t achieve 88.7% original syntax within two decades of threads it wasn’t any less enjoyable or valid.
  8. Have all rollmuckers who wanted a launch one got a preorder yet? @womblingfree @LowCostMonkey We should try to alert all these folk directly when preorders are back up. Can’t have our rllmuk brethren left short.
  9. Gonna wait to see what Exxonmobil have up their sleeves.

Missed the start of this. Has Puyo Puyo Terrorist 2 been shown yet?
  11. At least in the UK and US with their respective court precedents, all corporations are legally compelled to maximise profit to shareholders. They’ll gouge us all as much as they can unless it then harms their bottom line again (eg through negative PR). Attach whatever label you want to that, consumerism or anti-consumerism, and floral rhetoric, “for the gamers”, “offers” etc all don’t whitewash this mechanism, extracting as much out of us as they can. Are there degrees of this? Sure, with the pattern usually being the more dominant a corporation the more egregious the anti-consumer practises.
  12. Anyone know where’s the best place to check for stock? This post is swaying me. I want the digital edition, cleaner.

  14. I wonder if any of these sentiments are us just ageing out of games. I know I’ve internal strife (not cloud lol) about whether I’m allowed to continue to enjoy games as I get older, and take solace from people like Mark Kermode’s continued enthusiasm (albeit worn) in the allied arts. A 3080/90 sitting under the xmas tree might just be the thing to reignite long lost xmas excitement. It’s certainly going to take at least a £650 purchase for a single component. Are we just perpetually chasing something that will never return, unscrambling the egg of youth?
  15. Between the RTX 3080, Oculus Quest 2, PS5, XSX, their multiple keynotes, as well as a 4K TV upgrade to get the most out them, I was facing a concussive impact in the old pocket-region. Was even contemplating an iPad upgrade. Thankfully there’s nothing I need right now with the consoles beyond day 1 excitement, the 3080 isn’t as spectacular as I’d primed, I’ve rigorously visualised PC faffing and driver errors and Oculus have facebooked me out of the Quest 2. Apple have also delayed the next iPad Pro. So while there is an undeniable fomo tension, my bank account is intact, unsullied by any botched/duplicate orders, I’ve no anxiety about whether I’ll have delivery on release day or whether I need to consider cancelling pending orders and so on. I also feel superior to my previous self (and to some of you if we’re being honest) in that I’ve tamed my impulsivity. I’ll eventually get some of these things but I don’t really need them right now, potentially at a premium. Or do I? This supposed maturity could just be a dulling of nerves or even outright sloth. Anyone else tensely sitting on zero preorders despite the silicon flurry?

So is there no way at all to use this without linking a real Facebook profile?
