I think the advantage of the keyboard is going to be when switching plasmids/weapons, as you can use the keys to immediately select the one you want, or use the mouse wheel. From what I hear, when you use the pad, it pauses the action while you select what you want - unless you scroll through them with LB. Can someone that is playing it describe what it's like when you're switching between plasmids/weapons when you have a few of them on the go... and how well it 'feels'? I'm seriously not sure which version to go for. The only real downside to the PC version is needing to have the PC downstairs while I play it, although having the taste of using it with my new LCD means almost every game I play on it now is going to look lame on my 17" TFT - so it may end up staying down here for gaming.

That's good to know... I was hoping it'd be decent build quality.

I've got a dilemna... I don't know whether to get the PC version and cancel my 360 preorder. Fired up the PC demo this morning, and at 1080p (1920x1080) on my LCD the bloody thing flew along with every option maxed out. Blimey. All of the jaggies and shimmering problems of the 360 version aren't there (I realise they're only a minor thing anyway, I'm just sensitive to them), and the control system is more appealing. The problem is, I can't really use the PC downstairs long term - and it's not really comfortable juggling the keyboard and mouse on the sofa. That's the only issue really. You even get the option of using a 360 pad, so effectively it's the 360 version at a higher resolution. Bah. It's a good dilemna to have, I know... but still.

Getting back to the game.... Is there any kind of back story related to the protagonist? Or is what happens at the start of the game all we really know of him?

Calm down lads! I've just been fiddling around some more, and the problem is still evident in VGA, but VGA on my TV gives me a softer picture whereas component is sharper. I've tried component (in 720p and 1080p) and VGA quite a few times (shifting between the two) and the problem is there with both, just not as evident with the softer picture of VGA. I've also just tried it on my 1280x1024 17" TFT and it's there too. I think I'm just quite sensitive to these 'problems', as it's not the first time I've been annoyed with the 'shimmering' in games. I don't think we should dwell on it though (despite me resurrecting the issue with my screenshot) as I do think the game looks lovely overall. The bump mapping effects and most of the textures look really nice, and the style/setting is fab.

That's through component at 1080p, on my Samsung M87 37" LCD. Aye, VGA looks nicer generally for me.

I've taken a picture... See the top of that railing and how there are dark and light sections? As soon as I walk into this room I'm seeing it like this... and if I move around and the light changes, the lighter areas change position. When you're moving around, it looks like the whole railing is shimmering in the light, which is extremely off putting. It's like the railing is being dissected and then reconstructed in super quick time as I shift position. Even when I stand still (which the screenshot shows) the railing doesn't look solid. I'm not usually anal about these things, and it seems petty to highlight these things bearing in mind that I really like the demo, but I'm just trying to explain something that is quite obvious to me that other people don't seem to be seeing at all.

Yeah I know you are!! I don't know how to explain how and why it looks better through the VGA cable, but it does. I just tried it again, and it's the shimmering on the edges of objects that is less profound, which is making the jaggies less obvious. If anyone is bothered, I'll upload a photo if I can get a decent one. There's a definate improvement in Forza too. In any case, I'm happier now that I'm using the VGA cable... the dashboard looks worse for some reason, but overall it just has a nicer feel.

Sorry to go back to the jaggy issue, but I've just got hold of a VGA cable for my 360 and there's a vast improvement in that regard. There's still a bit of shimmering on the edges of buildings, but it's much better now - and it generally looks better through the VGA cable. A few people on the net have also mentioned that the VGA cable helps with jaggies when playing on a 1080p set, so I'm assuming that it scales better than through the component cable. I guess they're naturally going to show up more on a higher resolution set, which I suppose is why some people are noticing them more than others.

Anyone know what the Big Daddy figurine is like, quality wise?

    BioShock

To be fair, I don't think anyone is suggesting it's a bad game... but when you get loads of people gushing about it, it's natural that some folk will point out some of the small flaws or discuss the bad points as a counter to the praise, without specifically mentioning all the good points that have already been discussed.

There's always hyperbole on the part of developers/publishers when it comes to game mechanics, features etc. Complex plots, freedom of choice, revolutionary gameplay mechanics etc are never as profound as previews suggest.

Not sure if I wanted to know the specifics of that, but hey.

One of the achievements suggests there is a set amount of Little Sisters... if so, won't there be a set number of Big Daddies? i.e no respawns at all?

There are clearly a couple (or 3?) groups of slicers than come down the stairs, but I'm pretty sure I was wandering around for a good while after I'd 'disposed' of them without any more coming at me. I quite like what I hear about the game repopulating areas that you've visited. If the game simply repawns the same enemies, in the same location, at a specific time; then that would be pretty lame, but if it throws in a few random splicers at various locations at random intervals then I think that's a little different. We'll see how it turns out, but I'm not put off too much at this stage. Still unsure whether to cancel my 360 order and go for the PC version, as I'm not comfortable with FPS' on consoles yet. I guess I'll wait for the demo and see if my rig can handle 1920x1080.

Genuine question, but is a 1080p TV likely to show up jaggies more than on a 720p or SD set? I'm quite close in to my TV (which is quite large for the size of my room) so it's surprising to read that a minimum of 4xAA will have been applied here as they definately screamed out at me to some degree.

    BioShock

I must say, I didn't notice them on the fire... just on door frames, buildings etc, i.e when you move around static objects.

    BioShock

I noticed the jaggies too Blue... I'm quite sensitive to them as I usually turn AA right up on PC games to get rid of them totally. I'm not sure what level of AA has been applied to this, but I'm playing quite close up on a 37" LCD and they were definately noticible - as I said, more so when the light catches the edge of things.

    BioShock

The jaggies are a little off putting for me too, especially when the lighting catches the edge of something... it's an immersion thing I guess. It still looks good overall though. Still, I loved the demo. Played it through a couple of times now, and I can't believe I died the first time round. That said, I did miss the machine gun and the fire Plasmid initially, and got raped by the sentry while I struggled with the controls.

You're dead pretty much straight away if 3 splicers hit you though... that's what happened to me. And the flying drone things killed me once.
