    Halo: Reach

It looks as though I could walked all the way along it were it not for the timer. Yeah, that was probably what I enjoyed most about Halo 2. You could literally get 'out' of most of the levels fairly easily, they didn't even bother putting invisible walls anywhere. For example the bit outside of the space station on the first level, due to low gravity it was especially easy to leap up to the top of the structures and walk a massive distance the length of the station, well outside of where you're supposed to go. Pointless, but fun to explore. Also on the New Mombasa level there were numerous places where you could scale buildings then end up being able to get up on top of the buildings where you weren't supposed to, and you could see where the game world ended with just roads going into a void of nothingness (which you could fall off into) and buildings half rendered because you could now see them from angles you weren't supposed to, etc etc. I found it fascinating to get a behind the scenes look like that, with minimal effort, and it really made it clear just how unfinished and rushed the game was. Going back to Reach, I managed to delete my progress on Legendary mode too (was up to the fifth mission ). I was looking at the challenges, and I saw i'd completed the weekly one, but had no idea what it was for. I didn't even know there were campaign ones so I pressed 'A' with it selected, I got a message about progress being lost but I didn't pay much attention because I thought they were all multiplayer achievements. It took me to a lobby for a specific campaign level, difficulty heroic, and now I don't get the option anywhere to 'resume campaign' That was possibly my favourite bit, the [mission 8 spoilers] , plus hunters are my 'favourite' enemy. Only heard after i'd done it on Heroic (a tough challenge) that you could just run in and out again, seems a shame, since it's such a great scene.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with playing on normal. There's certainly some enjoyment to be had, and it suits those who prefer to spray and pray and run into groups meleeing everything to death etc. You just can't make criticisms on the combat from playing on Easy or Normal, as they're in a completely different league, requiring different mechanics of play and different approaches, to Heroic and Legendary, the way the game should be played. It's a shame their difficulty grading system is so weird, i'm quite sure if they got rid of the current Easy mode (which is a joke, it may aswell be called God Mode) and called them Easy, Normal (Heroic), and Hard (Legendary) then nobody would ever play 'Easy' and all would be right in the world.

Oh come on, don't neg me. Just please do yourself a favour, and play the game the way it's meant to be played - not on the pussy difficulty levels

I find it funny that people who played on Normal feel qualified to make a solid judgement on the combat it's really not worth playing the game on anything lower than Heroic, but that's more a flaw of their difficulty grading system than anything else. For any other game, Halo's Normal is the ridiculous easiest setting that is the one nobody older than five and with any dignity picks. I found the story fairly decent (comparatively) for what it's worth. Hardly a masterpeice, but fairly engaging and easy to follow, unlike 2+3. Didn't really 'move me' when (story spoilers)

    Halo: Reach

I don't think it will hold. The thing is with Halo multiplayer is that everyone goes on it at first, due to the hype a little bit, but after a few months (maybe even less) i'd estimate the population halves at least, as people get bored, other releases come out, or they become disillusioned with the mechanics. I don't think it helps that it's a very competitive and hard to master game either, a lot of people with less experience get scared off. Compare to something like COD which seems more casual where you can just drop in, drop out, and there's always a wealthy selection of poor players or people not really giving a shit/paying attention, so it's never too frustrating. I suppose it's more of a 'generic' shooter in one sense too (in that it's based on real world technology/guns, etc) so it probably has a wider appeal. By Christmas time I don't think Reach/Halo 3 will be able to hold a candle to Black Ops and the Modern Warfare games (which I presume a lot of people still play regularly). If we're just straight up comparing Reach with Black Ops it could be a different story I suppose, since a fair few people might be wary of a non-MW COD game developed by a different company.

Personally I think the Hunters are brilliant in this, finally the challenge they need to be. Very tricky on Legendary or Heroic, especially when there are a couple of them or more. But once you get the hang of their pattern, they aren't too frustrating. Just completed the third mission (night time one with Jun) on Legendary and fuck me. Absolutely brilliant, epic, and so rewarding. This game really comes alive on the higher difficulty settings.

Nice. I'll probably use that place to get the achievement. Love the reaction of the grunts

I managed a few on Elites as they're often distracted with trying to kill your other squad members. Got a couple on Jackals at some points. Tried on a few occasions to do it to a Grunt but never managed it, but supposedly it's possible...

I was curious, so I just watched it. What the hell?

Presumably they took the banshee out because it was always a fucking stupid addition to that map and ridiculously unbalanced, and the middle not moving, probably something to do with the fact it's a forged map? I never bothered with forge but presumably you can't add moving/dynamic parts to maps like that.

Agree with everything here. Having just started again on Legendary and done one level it seems about right, it was the kind of difficulty I was hoping for on Heroic, ie not ridiculous and frustrating, but a very good challenge. You really have to make good use out of the available resources, and not do anything stupid if you're up against a few elites, which is how it should be. On the first mission I found myself kind of 'checkpoint trapped', near the end when you have to clear the landing zone for the hornet and there's a little gully with loads of elites and grunts pouring out of a dropship, I got given a checkpoint with nothing but the assault rifle with very little ammo, and the plasma shock absorber, or whatever it's called. It was pretty much impossible to take anything down with those two weapons, not with the remaining ammo I had. Was scratching my head for a few restarts, then figured out, I could use the truck parked outside the guy's little house at the back and use it to run over the elites This kind of thing is the best part of Halo for me, thinking outside of the box how to tackle a tricky situation. Reach seems to positively encourage it to, what with all the multiple routes and branching high/low platforms etc. Also I tried to recommend a file (mainly for the achievement) and like you said, it seems now all you can do is recommend it to your entire friends list
  12. What does Emile say before he dies? Can't remember, don't remember cringing or anything though.

It is pretty cool, was always one of my favourite Halo 2 maps too. Just a shame nobody ever picks it on matchmaking.

I wish I hadn't played that map in multiplayer before the mission, then my reaction would probably have been the same

    Halo: Reach

My gripe is the fact that in a couple of areas they haven't designed MP or SP parts, ie, the parts where there's a MP map from Halo 2 given a different lick of paint then slapped into campaign. It just jars with me, hard to explain why but it does. I know it's petty, but it doesn't make sense for there to be structures with exactly the same layouts as Halo 2 multiplayer maps during the campaign for Reach.
