Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 Sets All-Time Record for the Biggest Entertainment Launch with More than $400 Million in North America and United Kingdom Sales Alone

More Than 6.5 Million Units Sold in U.S. and U.K. in 24 Hours

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Shattering its own day-one sales records, Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced that its highly-anticipated Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch ever with an estimated sell-through of more than $400 million and more than 6.5 million units in North America and the United Kingdom alone in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records across all forms of entertainment, something no other entertainment franchise in any medium has ever accomplished. Last year, in North America and the United Kingdom, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops™ had estimated day-one sell-through of $360 million and in 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, set day-one records with estimated sell through of $310 million, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

On November 8, 2011, millions of fans attended more than 13,000 midnight openings at retail stores around worldwide. According to Microsoft, after just two days, the number of gamers playing simultaneously on Xbox® Live® set a new peak concurrency record.

“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”

Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing added, “Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere. I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”

Separately, Activision announced this morning that in support and gratitude for the efforts of American servicemen and women, this Veterans Day it donated $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit, public benefit corporation that seeks to provide job placement and training for veterans. This latest donation will be added to the $2 million that Activision has already donated to the Endowment, which has provided more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships to veterans’ organizations across the country since it was conceived by Bobby Kotick in November of 2009.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is rated “M” (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Strong Language and is available now for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows® PC. 2. Is there anyway for DICE to have mic only servers on the console. Make it one of the options you can toggle?

The game loses so so much when you can't actually talk with anyone just silence,And people all over the place being not very effective. The difference when you and your team is communicating is amazing which is sadly very rare. Sorry for bringing it up in here, but CoD gets it so right with voice options, and that's a game that you don't really need it in. BF3 focus is on teamplay and i simply don't know why DICE doesn't sort it out or make it clearer to people what the options are available.

Maybe they should have kept the commander option in. Would at least make sure that some teams have a guiding hand.

  3. Clippa: Engineer is a funny class. It's got some of the best tactical toys and potential for really involving gameplay, but because of that bloody infantry busting RPG, you get a higher percentage of mongs flocking to it than say Support. I only want to level up for mines but I feel dirty even doing that; like every other class is looking at me when I spawn and thinking there is some spotty 13YO sitting at the controls.

I say as long as you're doing your role properly it's fine. When i play Engineer i'm taking out tanks and Jeeps and mining areas so if any tanks get into a flag point they are swiftly dealt with. Nothing better than seeing a triple kill flash up on your screen as another tank or two gets taken down. Also loving the javelin for taking on the tanks.

Roll on Modern Warfare 3 to get the team death matchers out of the non tdm games. Just played a hilariously irritating game of conquest. Joined on Metro about half way through yet seems like a tight game, about 200 - 195 yet both teams kill scores were ridiculously high... How long had this game been going on?

THe answer a fucking age because not one person on either team had any and I mean any intention of capturing any kind of flag At one point every single player was an engineer. It was just TDM or quake with rockets. Constant rushing around the map ignoring flags to be captured and just shooting each other. Fair play to the opposition even though they had no grasp or care of how the game was actually meant to be played they were extremely good at shooting and I suspect come MW3 will be beasting others. However it was a delight to just ignore them and keep capturing flags.

Back to Rush for me this afternoon I think.

As soon as you saw it was Conquest on Metro you should have backed out. It's an annoying bloodbath because of those escalators, and the fact that no one can be assed to think tactically and instead rush up the stairs and get wiped out immediately.

I've found conquest ok as long as you keep busy as you're right it seems people can't be bothered to cap i come top of the leaderboard regularly in Conquest as i actually attempt to play the mode properly, and score more points as i'm also doing other stuff in game like bringing team-mates back to life or if i'm engineer keeping tanks away from capping points. I think the problem is that TDM is too restricted so people use conquest as some sort of open world deathmatch mode. Which is annoying as hell.

  4. Snuck up behind three guys on Caspian last night and knifed them all in the back. :D

Really loving the game but my oh my some players are awful. treating conquest like it's TDM means i can just walltz from one flag to the other capping them with no resistance. And when anyone does appear i've already pre mined the entrance so they often go BOOM.

  5. Put some hours into MP last night. This really feels like Homefront right down to the way the controls, which is a good thing imo..

Conquest really feels fun this time BC2 conquest was sometimes a bit boring but here the m ix of different distractions means it all feels a bit more busy which is a good thing. But some players still don't get it. I was getting very good points because people just couldn't be assed to cap the flags.

I'm also loving that the 'cunt of the air' from BC2 i.e the helicopter has been neutralised for now by the stinger missile. Even better when you take out a cocky jetpilot.

  6. Was playing the SP for a while last night, until it locked up during the jet misson. I was enjoying the stage up until then. Onto MP jumped into Caspian Border, good fun, feels very sprightly moving around, knifed a guy who thought he could sneak up behind our team.

Haven't had the pleasure of a jet yet, but the copters are good. Spraying death down below feels utterly evil this time.
