  2. Unless you're planning on handling it I wouldn't bother with varnishing it. I would varnish things for gaming with but if it's a display thing, then I wouldn't bother. I only tend to varnish things for the effect (like a bit of gloss on a gem or something) or matte if I've used inks and they've gone glossy.
  3. I've just ordered two large multi person models, The Triumph of St Katherine which led me to Katakros, which is just an awesome looking bunch of stuff. Advantage of not playing I can just pick up cool looking shit (although I used both sisters and undead back in the '90s), I won't run out of things to paint for a while. I didn't get Mortarion because it's too big...

  7. as I remember it the temperature is to do with paint viscosity or something, I’ve seen a lot of people recommend putting your spray cans in a bucket of warm (not hot) water before use. Marco also has a good video about using spray paint: I’m a prick so I prime with an airbrush, but I’ve had good results with both Vallejo & Scale 75 primers applying with a brush too.
  8. yeah, that was fucking stupid. I can kinda see what they were going for with the if this is an art form then we should be able to tackle more subjects, but that book was not that way to do it. And I can’t believe at no point in production no one had second thoughts about it. And then the promotional video with Holocaust images in it… I’m probably not a good judge of this stuff, I’m slightly uncomfortable with the amount of busts & display minis produced of the SS.
  9. If anyone’s looking for a mini painting book I can really recommend Kirill Kanaev’s book for AK Interactive. It’s massive, apparently took him two years to write, and full of details. Mine arrived about a week ago and I’ve barely scratched the surface, it’s something I’ll be going back to for a long time. It’s expensive but for me it’s well worth it.   14. Starting to put some paint on this dude, been concentrating on the cloak trying to capture the look of the original artwork. And I’ve just noticed all the crap I’ve managed to get on the back, I’ll be in there with tweezers tomorrow.
  15. Oils are way more forgiving than acrylics since they have such a long drying time. A little solvent and you can take them off completely, even days later.

  17. Also Playground have built a second team to do Fable, as I understand it they gave their existing team the choice on whether to go onto it or not. What I hope they get is Dene’s major influence for Fable’s setting is British folk tales which are by and large pretty fucked up and nasty.

  19. One of my favourite talks at Unite every year is Ian Dundore (a Unity employee) telling you everything they tell you is wrong and this is how you should do it. Highlights include him getting the audience to heckle Unity’s UI lead at the back of the hall for the the decisions made in that system.
  20. That’s a Unity thing, everything is a black box even their engine unless you’re paying a shitload for code access. So much of Unity development is working around their limitations. It’s a right exercise in frustration, their excuses is the licenses they have for all the third party APIs but Epic can manage it… For every good thing there’s a shitload of frustration, and I say that as someone who started using it in 2012, and had exclusively used it for the last 6 years - I’ve a real love hate relationship with it.   21. It isn’t unusual to have this sort of thing, test levels just to try things. On Fable 2 we had a sim test level with the basics of our simulation to try out so we didn’t have to wait for the real regions to develop things. Similarly we had combat arenas for testing out the combat ai. But even then there’s be issues in the actual levels that wouldn’t come up in the test levels. If you look at making ofs for various games you can see this type of thing of a lot of them, especially is they’re combat or movement focused.
