I tend not to mind high priced arcade sticks as they're mostly filed under objet d'art in my head. But if I stop and think for a moment and actively transfer them over into the "game controller" category, I find myself temporarily horrified by the price. That JLF? Probaby £30. Buttons? Can't be more than £40. functional but passable board? £40? Probably knock a third off that when you're operating at economies of scale.

So that's just a really expensive plastic and metal box, really isn't it. And the arcade-standard nature of the components means that really, once you're using it, it's exactly the same as every other Arcade Stick ever with those bits.

Yeah, and the pcb's they use are often laggy or temperamental or both. You're far better off getting something cheap second hand with a sturdy, easy to mod case and sticking a decent brook pcb in there along with your stick and buttons of choice.

It'll cost less and it'll be far better quality than these things.

The price tags they pluck out of their arses are ridiculous, it's a convenience tax for people who just want to pay their money and get something they don't have to tinker with.

If you've put together a pc, which is kids 5 piece chunky wooden jigsaw tier, you can put together an arcade stick.

Having said that, when you look at the quality and price of game controllers nowadays, a decent, sturdy arcade stick that'll just work for like 30 years with little to no maintenance, the price doesn't seem too bad then!

  2. The only time I got one of those "Maaaaate! Come on now, mate" emails from steam was when I refunded "No Man's Sky".

I think they must have had such a slew of refunds for that game that they fired out a load of those stock emails just to try to stem the tide.

They must have gotten the impression that a lot of people just wanted to see the car crash.

    Check your email for
steam "your refund request has been"
I've had 37 since 2015 which isn't too bad. Most of them from the 2015 and 2016 when refunding games was new and I probably was using it as a way to try things out.

No refunds this year. Only two for last year and none for 2021.

Everything is skippable with a single button press, so it's actually really quick.

Is that what it's like on pad? You have to press escape twice to get through dialogue and hold it down for a full second for cutscenes.

First world problems, I know, but it all adds up.

I miiiight want to let all the cutscenes and some of the dialogue play first time round when it comes out, but definitely not ever again after that.

I think my only complaint so far is it was a bit stuttery in places.

Yeah, stuttery as anything. Exactly the same with everything on the lowest settings too. I think it's just the nature of the beast. Always online so you're forever on the connections leash getting yanked backwards through time. I remember diablo 3 being quite unsmooth on pc too at times.

Hopefully that'll all settle down once most of the players get bored and wander off.

I heard it won't even have an offline mode for consoles this time round.

The online persistence with other people is really ruining this for me. It shouldn't be, it's such a nothing problem but it's bothering me way more than I thought it would.

Yeah, I don't want other cunts anywhere near my relaxing ARPG, thank you very much. I play this sort of thing before bed when I've been around people all day and I just want to unwind and breath and recharge my batteries.
I want to be offline in every sense, not having to worry about connection issues and not being able to pause.
I don't want to be wandering through my fantasy world and see some barbarian with GaryBlazeIt420 hovering over his head.
"Press enter to chat". Fuck off!

  4. Don't be surprised if after queuing for an hour you get an error message or get booted after a minute.
If it's anything like the first round, it got a lot better after the first day when everyone and their ganny was rushing to get on there.
Staying up is your best bet if that's an option, the servers really seemed to calm down later on in the night when all the normal Normans were abed.

As Layten said earlier in the thread, run it windowed while you do other things, when the window is unfocused/inactive it runs at like 7fps or something and won't use much resources.

  6. Yes! I've done this loads. Find some doujin shmup I like the look of, go to install it in my games folder, see it's already there. Fire it up, and I've got replays of me completing it :S
My memory is utter dogshit. Sometimes the date on the files will only be from like a year previous.
I suppose it doesn't help that it's all just spaceships and bullets and things can get blurry.

I'm sure everyone's had that moment when you go to buy a game on sale and see it's already in your account, but to actually spend time playing the game until you beat it and then to have no memory of that is something else!

  8. Crossgunr: Infinite competition has ended. I was reigning supreme for a while there, but SCT came up with some godly bat stacking strats when he realised you could seal the bats and ride them to glory.

It was too late for this old dog to learn new tricks, but kobito managed to adapt quickly and take the top spot.

I got top place for the boss rush, which is a much more pure test of skill, and actually the main mode of the game, I've decided :hat:

Aktane has knocked it out of the park again. Even better than the original game. An instant classic.

edit: Sake! I would have won if I did this yesterday. Pressure was off :D

Diablo 3 chunky graphics are much nicer than this one's gritty style

I wasn't a fan of the heavy filtering in diablo 3, like it had vaseline smeared on the lens and fog everywhere, and I wasn't a fan of the rounded, cartoony look, even less so in torchlight 2, and that game looked really smudgy as well. This one looks much cleaner and the dark places feel better done, it feels nice and atmospheric but you can see shit. I've not felt the need to crank up the gamma yet.

I think this style is a step in the right direction, but it's all very bland and safe and generic so far.

Sorcerer is so ridiculously easy that on world tier 2 I’m just running around one shorting everything at level 8. In under forty minutes from start.

Haha, yeah, it started off good but now I'm just chewing through everything with my lightning on tier 2 :D I suppose I'd rather feel over than underpowered, but it felt like a nice balance at first, I was having to use my main shot on the popcorn and get my mana up to unleash hell on the bigger baddies. Now I'm just storming in and taking out screenfuls of bellends with one click.

Does this feel a bit stiff to anyone else? I’m not really getting the irresistible gameplay loop I’d expect. It’s certainly running well and looking nice, but feels a bit sticky and plodding in the moment to moment gameplay.

Yes, definitely, doesn't feel as fast and as smooth and as visceral as diablo 3. I'm sick of pressing escape for all the cutscenes and dialogue as well. Would love an option to cut out all the guff and just get straight to the meat and spunk of it which is twatting munsters, especially for subsequent playthroughs.

You're right, there's something lacking in the combat, but like others have said, it's early on in the campaign on easy difficulty, we might be misremembering how flat that felt in the other games.

I'm warming up slowly. Will definitely buy it when it comes out. There's nothing glaringly bad about it, just feels slightly underwhelming so far.

I might switch to my rogue again tonight, see how that feels a bit more levelled up.

  10. I know what you mean. I've agreed with your observations so far, and I'm not warming to it too much yet, but I'll probably still get it since I like a decent ARPG as something comfy to play of a night time when I'm too tired to play a proper game. Just going through the motions, keeping the daemons at bay.
This'll probably be good enough to tick that box.

I've tried the rogue and the sorcerer so far and I think I like the sorcerer the best. It felt fun running around electrocuting everyone.

I've had a couple of chances to try this again today and I haven't bothered, which is pretty telling.

  11. I had a good half an hour before they kicked me out, which sounds a lot better than most of you got.

    llqhrsS.jpg

It's telling me there's a 93 minute wait there when I tried to get back in, so that's not happening.

It wasn't very exciting and they've added a fucking dodge button

I'm still prepared to give it a chance, but it wasn't a great first impression.

  12. Haha. It always seems to be the way.

I was playing Crossgunr the other day and had this really clean run where I was dodging everything and didn't die until right at the end.
The next run I had, the one where I blast my score was scrappy as all hell and I'm headbutting bullets left, right and centre, barely managing to refill my health in time for the next mistake, trousers falling down, the lot.

You might not come out of it looking too sexy, but at least it makes the run way more fun to watch! It's a lot more fun cheering on the underdog than watching some cyborg performing a flawless routine.

Aw, man. I'd have warned you if I knew.
    Hate those guys.
