    Far Cry 2

Playing this game is a bit like having a Porsche that all of a sudden won't start for no obvious reason, or that, while driving along a really nice road all of a sudden has all its meters blacked out. It's bloody brilliant as a game, but the bugs are starting to piss me off.

Also, just aim at one of them in one of the towns and he'll shit his pants, backing off and holding up his hands for cover... They most certainly didn't do that early in the game... MGL-140, dart rifle, uzi is an ace combination by the way. Stealth from afar, accurate headshots up close and BIG explosions whenever... The Homeland (shotgun) is a decent early buy. Slow but accurate and most of all dirt cheap. Then the IEDs, MP5 and the dart rifle as soon as it's available.

Look for the answer just a page back... Only save at safe houses and use a fresh save every time and you should be ok.

Well, I'm saving only at safe houses and using a new save file every time and it seems to be working...

Update, might provide useful for anyone struggling with the save game glitch... So, at 69% my save game files started to freeze the game. Happened to me as well, I figured. I went back to a working file, played for some time, saved at a few times and then quit to try if they worked. Nothing. Today, the plan was to finish the game in one go, but as I was about to load up my game I realised there was a save file I hadn't tried. Lo and behold, it worked! Did some research and it seems the consensus is that safe house save files might work, even if arms shop/city/mission files don't... So I guess as long as you're saving in the safe houses you should be ok. I certainly hope so...

I wrote a post about how it all truly came together when I realised I actually could treat it like any other FPS once I got the hang of it a page or two back. Basically, it's a bit like Halo in the sense that the game is based around a pretty simple concept that is then rehashed over and over but that it's how[/ı] you choose to approach any situation that determines what your experience will be like. The AI might not be great but the combat is quite good and convincing and any given situation will be a completely different experience for two different players. The various weapons at your disposal, the scenery and the numerous ways you can approach a target means that there's a multitude of ways to solve a mission and once you start controlling the game instead of letting it control you, you will have much more fun.

Number 28, you're me after about five hours. Five hours later, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Thirty hours later I loved it.

Gah, so basically complete four or five main missions in one go...? Good thing it seems I've done most of the ones that can be subverted then... Surely there must be a better way, though? Although, what you're saying ZOK is that you had the same problem but it went away again at 86%? Missus is away on Friday... Might just load up on beer and blast through the rest of the game in one go...

Well, now I know. I'm gutted but it may still turn out alright. My last save file from yesterday is corrupted. Reloaded the one before that which worked, finished the mission I had running, saved and tried to reload that save file (a new save by the way), but that didn't work either. I suppose there's something happening when I finish the mission so next I will attempt to simply cancel that mission and do another one instead to see if it sorts out.

Just had one of my most rewarding experiences in the game - when it reverted into what is basically just about any shooter out there. Got a buddy mission to take out a guy at the airfield. Had just bought the flamethrower and decided I would bring that, the MGL-140 grenade launcher in the primary slot and an uzi for any close encounters. Head over to the airfield in an assault truck, handbrake slide into the compound, hop up to the turret, start firing away at the guys closest to me. Take them out, then jump out of the jeep. People are firing at me from every direction! Whip out the flamethrower and literally spray the grass in every direction, then move a bit up the road. See some enemies in the distance, ready the grenade launcher and start firing away without using the iron sights. See guys flying in every direction. Hear a whining sound and then my health go from five to two bars. Realise there's a guy with an RPG somewhere. Start strafing while firing the occasional grenade at any stragglers coming at me, see the rocket guy, take aim and blow him to smithereens. Start circling the building, switching between the MGL and the flamethrower depending on the distance to the enemies. A couple of minutes later, I've used up two health shots, haven't fired my uzi a single time and have basically taken out a horde of enemies the way you would have in Quake or any other visceral shooter. This is not the way you should play this game. But it allows you to, and if you succeed, the feeling of accomplishment is so much greater! And then I realise that maybe this is the problem that lots of people have with the game early on. When I first started out, I tried to tackle it like a regular shooter and promptly got my ass handed to me. It was only when I started acting like it truly was a fucking hostile environment in which I had to be at my wits end at all times that I fully started to appreciate it. But once you crack the code, you can treat it like any other shooter - simply because you know when to duck and cover and when to just rush in and spray people with lead. This is a stealth game. But it is a stealth game that allows you to act like it's a shooter. However, unlike most other similarly open games, you need to master the stealth before you can truly appreciate - and exploit - these aspects. Most people probably approach it as a shooter and are either let down or get by without knowing what they've missed. A lucky few see it for what it is and get to appreciate all aspects of the game. For my next run, I'd love to go through it without using any sniper rifles at all - the challenge would be much greater but so would the reward. And now that I've mastered it, I know that it's far from impossible to do so while remaining in control of the events. This is one brilliant game.

Perhaps a bug but it happened to me as well. I simply went and did a main storyline mission instead and after that Mike's was open for business. So agree with this... Plus I've probably spent between five and ten hours driving and walking around aimlessly hoping to get that signal... Haven't had a single serious bug yet, a few minor ones but given the scale of the game it's worked very well.

WTF, did you just run through the main missions? Ok, so I'm spending a lot of time doing useless stuff but I'm at 62% after nearly 60 hours...

I've probably got 15 saves running, just in case. Always write over the last one, keep one that I don't write over after each finished main mission since 50% complete... Better to be paranoid I suppose. On what scale?

    Far Cry 2

Definitely. I don't know how I would react to the game killing bug right now. I've spent a good 55 hours on the game, still have lots of loose ends to sort and am still only at 62%. With 208 diamond cases found, I know for sure I wouldn't bother with all of them on a second playthrough. Neither would I do every single mission subverted (actually one of the main reasons I could consider a second playthrough would be to do them for the factions as I imagine they play out quite differently that way). Still, even if that nasty, unforgivable glitch would strike, I would probably just get very pissed off then lap it up and accept the fact, move on and start anew... The USAS is fucking brilliant by the way! Took out the entire dogon village in a couple of minutes with no thought whatsoever to stealth. Had completely ignored the shotguns up to now. Will need to change that for a second run...

The RPG is a waste of space compared to the M79 and later on the MGL-140. Especially since the other option for that slot is the dart rifle... I still pick it sometimes, however, if I'm using the dragunov and the uzi (which I prefer over the LMGs). As for enemy snipers, they're ok as long as they're not stuck in a rock still being able to shoot you...
