Talking to a dealer last week who said old Floyd vinyl has dried up - at one point he'd get loads in (I mean, how many copies of DSOTM were sold?) but now it's hard to find, especially The Wall.

I think that’s happening with a lot of popular older titles now. I can’t seem to find any Barry White out in the wild in records shops, and his albums used to be everywhere.

  2. I hope they don't follow Miller's edgy misogynistic crap too closely for the series. From the wikipedia synopsis-

    Spoiler

Karen Page, the former secretary of the Nelson & Murdock law offices in New York City and ex-girlfriend of Matt Murdock, had left years earlier to pursue an acting career. After a brief period of success, she became a heroin addict and was reduced to starring in pornographic films in Mexico.

I just realised I could have watched Everything Everywhere All At Once instead of this crap and now hate both myself and this film.

I think Prey, Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere all at Once have really shown Marvel up this year.

Thor 4 is a steaming turd.

  4. Fave albums so far this year? Feels like there's been a ton of good stuff, with more that I haven't listened to, or is yet to be released. So far-

    SAULT - Air

    Anteloper - Pink Dolphins

    Beyonce - Renaissance

Soil & "Pimp" Sessions - Lost in Tokyo

    Doomcannon - Renaissance (no relation)

KOKOROKO - Could We Be More

Binker & Moses - Feeding the Machine

    Ryo Kawasaki - Juice (re-issue)

Danger Mouse & Black Thought - Cheat Codes

    Shabaka - Afrikan Culture

    Whole album is superb.

I've been listening to it a lot lately, loving it. The Michael Kiwanuka track reminded me of Broken Bells, of which I'd completely missed they have a new album out next month.

Is anyone finding much in the way of hip-hop CDs at charity shops? I’m not. Do people tend to hang onto them?

My son has recently got into hip-hop (anything early 90s onwards), but bar one Tupac CD (which turned out to have a Notorious BIG disc inside - doh!), and a couple of Eminem CDs, we’ve found nothing in a good 10 different chazzas.

Also, if anyone spots Dr Dre’s The Chronic on CD, so snap it up as it’s really valuable now (sadly), due to it being unavailable on my streaming platform or physical media.

I do come across hip-hop (and R&B) CD's every now and again, but, yep, quite rarely. Over the last year from my local Oxfam I've picked up Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique and The In Sound From Way Out, A Tribe Called Quest - Love Movement and We Got It From Here and Erykah Badu - Worldwide Underground. Randomly got Janelle Monae - Archandroid from there today.

It's usually 90s indie and boomer pop/rock in there.

  7. I, of course, couldn’t resist a portable, a Sony MZ-N510. ATRAC S, Net MD and runs off a single AA (without a caddy). Really nice little machine. Brought some Moondrop Chu’s to use with it, and they are some amazing IEMs for just £20

Picked up a Goodmans CD player from B&M the other day, the speakers keep crackling though, I've tried pushing them into the back more but that's not made any difference, but annoyed really

New? Take it back for a refund? There's plenty of used stuff out there that will sound better than that.

    still has a vocoder vocal.

I don't mind a Herbie vocoder vocal, when done right. "I Thought It Was You" is a banger, for instance.

I walked into my local charity shop the other day and walked out with a Super Audio CD player (5.1) under my arm for £25. It was a Marantz DV9600, RRP $2100, and it sounds sublime. Find of the year, maybe decade! I have 2 SACDs I purchased without realising, Dark Side of the Moon and War of the Worlds, but looking more into SACDs the prices are insane! Any tips for getting started, are there many out in the wild? Is it even worth looking?

I guess it depends? Do you have a surround set-up, can hear the difference between 2ch CD and SACD, or just want to collect another format?

I think it also does DVD-Audio, so that's another format to consider too.

  11. I think we're reached peak vinyl. Prices are only going up- record companies are charging premium prices for new vinyl as manufacturing capacity is limited, and collectors are buying up all the used vinyl when there's only a limited amount of that available.

I've been selling some stuff on Discogs recently, including some £50-100 records, that I've priced to sell rather than sit there for months at inflated prices. Interestingly, the people buying them seem to be Discogs dealers that then re-list them for inflated prices.

I do wonder how much of Discogs is dealers selling record back and forth to each other.

I buy a lot more CDs now. I get the same buzz out of crate digging for CDs now as I did for vinyl in the 90-00s, and for the most part, it's super cheap.

I found my wife’s old MiniDisc player the other week, which I’d bought back in about 2004. Now I totally get why they were great back then (apart from Sony ‘s usual shit software). But here’s a genuine question, what’s the benefits of using a minidisc player now? I’m just curious, I can understand why people listen to vinyl (warmer sound, authentic and tangible packaging), but I’m curious what the benefits of minidiscs are? My wife mostly used them for making up her own “mix tape” minidiscs or for playing songs downloaded from usenet, are there any benefits of the format in 2022?

If you're not interested in physical media, and happy to stream, then minidisc isn't going to do anything for you.

However, I like physical media, and the act of making a mix disc rather than just re-arranging tracks on a streaming play list. I also prefer physical media to the extent that'll burn a minidisc of a stream (of albums I can't obtain a CD/LP of), and play the minidisc rather than the stream.

    PS- Vinyl isn't 'warmer'.

    Double album bargain at £67.99

I would expect that to come down in price closer to release. But stil, the wildly increasing vinyl prices do seem like the record companies are trying to milk every last drop from the end of the vinyl revival.
