  1. I think for me what slightly puts me off Kendrick is his portentousness. He leans into it so much. I mean, wearing a million dollar diamond crown of thorns is just parody though, how can he possibly take himself seriously in that. But he does, very seriously. Why does he need to be some weird Christ-like figure and not just a normal dude who can rap well.
  2. I have to say, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It is definitely an ego trip for that Adelstein guy, who in this show simultaneously comes across as as cool and hunky as Adelstein probably imagines he really was and still like bit of an annoying dickhead. But I thought it was well made and acted (the Yaks especially!) and the Japan setting and refences appeal to me.

  4. Bloody hell, PS1 games could look lovely! I think I'd take the original over the remake visually speaking, as I find is so often the case with remakes and remasters. But I adore the Klonoa series so I'm just chuffed we're getting these and they look lovely all the same!
  5. When look back on the history of the series Resi sure has been a wild ride. So many highs and lows and crazy mixes of high and low at the same time. What a series.
  6. No no @Darwock I've been singing 13s praises since it came out pretty much and still love just as much to this day. I love 12 too but not quite as much. I've been pleased to see 13 slowly getting reappraised as the years go on and appreciated for the risks it took and vision it had. Can understand it's not everyone's cuppa of course.

  8. Yeah I've always found it a bit weird how Kendrick often says bitch. It kind of rubs me the wrong way even more than with other rappers (and I don't like it then either though), I don't know why, maybe it's because it seems like he should know better and seems like he wants himself to be taken very seriously yet still loves a bit of casual sexism.
  9. Absolutely, I love game central and Jenkins, they never give a fig about hype and aren't afraid of going against the grain. I remember them giving Team Yu a little time of day too while the Shenmue 3 campaign was in full swing which only endeared me more to the little platform.
  10. Glad to see El Shaddai get a time extent. Lovely and unique game that I feared was largely forgotten about.
  11. Yeah Witchfinder is ok, made me chuckle a bit, but it's certainly not as good as their work on Partridge in my opinion and it's not a patch on the fantastic Upstart Crow either.

  13. Yeah I started this a few days ago and it's wonderful stuff, pretty much a dream game for me. Awesome space station setting, thoughtful and interconnected level design, a heap of gamey systems which interweave as cleverly as Talos 1 does, and most importantly the whole thing is just dripping in atmosphere. It just scratches that 'space station horror game' itch so good. I don't think I'd describe this game as a 'shooter' so much even though it kind of is, what it really reminds me of is my childhood memories with Castlevania, Metroid, or even early Resi games. It's beautiful and you can tell it's made by a bunch of geeks who were surely just making what they wanted to play.
  14. I haven't finished this yet, though I'm good way into it now (it's a big game!) and surely not too far off. I need to see how this ends before I figure out exactly how I feel about it all, but soulless it is not. It's a consummately made game, for sure. Still, I did go back to Death Stranding today, and returning to that glorious genius (not horrifically violent) lunacy felt so good after TLOU.

I do find it interesting that so many consider this a challenging piece of storytelling, but I'm only on the first chapter (first day) so my opinion may well change and it's a wonderful thing we if we do end up having different opinions anyway. Maybe I am comparing it to Hollywood films of a bygone era, certainly not comparing it to marvel. But so far it just has all the traditional elements I imagine a big budget zombie blockbuster would have, maybe something starring Tom Cruise or Will Smith, or whoever their teenage equivalents are . There's nothing very unconventional so far. But I'll play to the end and give my final thoughts then.

I finally started playing this, I was hoping this would be the first Naughty Dog game I love, but after 4 or 5 hours it seems to be having the same effect other ND games have on me and leaving me with a sense of apathy more than anything else. I don't know exactly what it is about all their games that leaves me cold, but I feel like they're always games that tick every box a critically acclaimed triple A game should tick, but I can't feel any soul in them. From story, characters to gameplay, it has everything a good game "should have", but the only exceptional thing that I can see about it is the polish and budget. I feel like I'm watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster, just as I did with Uncharted (albeit a different genre). I get the feeling ND wants to make movies far more than Hideo Kojima ever has. I would go as far as to say that ND's whole thing is refining the gaming status quo until it seems almost groundbreaking, except it isn't. Nothing wrong with all that though, and I'll keep on with this game as it's only early days still and it might still win me over.
  17. I've mentioned it in this thread before, but I actually love the approach Yu took in regards to story progression of Shenmue 3. It's just so Shenmue and seems like he was just trying to be true to himself and his vision of the game, rather than try to force some ultra blockbuster fireworks finale that could never realistically hope to match the fantasises the fans clamouring for that have been cultivating over years anyway. Yu just went his own route and did a total Shenmue move by not finishing it and by making the game more about the relationship of the two main characters than the revenge on Lan Di. It's bold and brilliant and feels like something he would have done while he was sill the big man at Sega rather than a tiny developer totally beholden to the fans. But also I suspect going that route was the only way Yu could make the pressure bearable for himself, just focusing on the spirit and atmosphere of the game rather than chasing after some ungodly dramatic payoff the fans want. And for me there was significant story progress in the game, as for me the Shenmue series was always clearly not really a revenge story but a coming of age story of sorts. I always expected the ultimate closure of the series would not be Ryo battering Lan Di but rather Ryo learning to let go of his hatred and his quest for revenge. When you go back and play the original games, it's done pretty well I think, the subtle portrayal of Ryo's emotional distance from the normal lives of people around him, and less subtle but the signposting that he's on a dark path in seeking revenge. And gradually we see him soften slightly over the course of the two games as he travels and makes new friends. And sure, we don't get closure or Ryo's renunciation of revenge in 3, but for the first time in the series it seems like he cares more about other people's lives than his own quest, he cares more about rescuing Shenhua's father than avenging his own. And it gives the game a wonderful excuse to plod around and be slow and rambling in the way Shenmue should be. And anyway Shenmue was really all about atmosphere and location, Yu knows that well and S3 has that in spades. China, in particular Niaowu, is stunning. And the whole thing is just full of so much heart and gratitude, it beautifully pays homage to the fans who made it possible and pays homage to itself. It's a game that is just happy to exist, for it knows how miraculous that existence is. I love 3 in a different way to the way I love the first two games (but to me, all three individual Shenmue games are somehow different beasts with same heart), but I love it just as any fan should, and any fan making a vid entitled "this game is terrible and I've wasted my life" is a cunt basically.

  19. I don't understand how these translators can not love names like Decoy Octopus, Big Boss and Solid Snake. The jarring blend of utter wackiness and realistic military fetishism has always been one of MGS' unique charms.
  20. Damn, this post broke my heart, I love SNK. I had no idea about this. What strange bedfellows they are. I guess I will be saying no to anymore Metal Slug in my life I'm actually glad KOFs best days are behind it now though and that MBS didn't insist on 15 being a return to lush sprite based animation, the fool!

  22. I'm not as up on all the new fangled ways to consume games and games media, ie twitch and youtube ect. But I think I actually read about games far more than I play them. I mainly read about them here and in Edge I suppose, but still I spend a lot more time reading about them than I do playing them. Part of the reason for that is perhaps that I'm fairly poor and games are fairly expensive these days. But also I do still get genuinely so excited reading about games, even ones I may never go on to play. I believe in games as a medium full of endless and exciting potential and thus enjoy keeping an eye on this industry (even when certain trends in it leave me cold) more than I do any other industry I think. It brings out a childlike joy in me.
  23. I may be the outlier here, but I really love slow long atmospheric introductions to games. They are often my favourite parts. And for me the action always hits harder when it's delayed. I also don't at all agree with the idea that it needs to be consistent with gameplay to come later in the game. A wonderful example for me in Yakuza 3. Yak 3 as an overall game I enjoyed, it was Yakuza and anyone who likes Yakuza knows what to expect from that. But not the intro, the intro was not typical Yakuza at all, in fact it was almost the opposite of it, you spend hours playing with and running after children at an orphanage in Okinawa. It was incredibly sweet and peaceful and picturesque. Certainly some people would find it boring, but for me it was the best Yakuza has ever been and my emotional investment in that orphanage carried me through the rest of the game. Yak 4 had none of this and I didn't even make past its opening chapter I got so bored.
