  1. There's a lot to be said for Rotax. You'll find it quite different to the TKMs you tested with Tim, these will have a lot more power but handle differently because they weigh more - Rotax braking points, for example, are quite a bit earlier, not just because of the extra speed but the extra momentum due to the weight. Did you test on clutched TKMs though? That will at least not be too different - I find it hard to go back to clutched karts now having driven direct drive for a year and a half. Of course, ignore all of that if you've already driven Rotax, I've lost track of who does what in here... I suspect Rotax gives you a better choice of venues if you want to go into MSA racing too - there seem to be TKM grids in the Midlands but not a lot elsewhere, particularly not in the south of the country. The downside really is the increased cost - but then if you're running your own you have a lot more control over your costs than we do already! The engines are sealed so you should be getting them rebuilt by authorised Rotax servicing people but I think that's probably only an issue for MSA racing - there's quite a lot of non-MSA racing around in which you can run pretty much anything

  3. No pootling around at the back at all! Unless I'm remembering completely wrong, no qualifying and you'll get a different starting position in each race, so you're right in the racing straight away
  4. Pfft, one of the nice things about Covkart is the community - you're racing the same people every month so it's pretty sociable.

  6. And yep, we do the Saturday and the Sunday, but the way Clubman is set up we do a bit less testing on the Saturday (we miss the first two sessions). You need it really - as Dudley says we're still improving after a year and a half of Clubman, and we test on the Saturday every time. We pay £250 each to the team for the whole weekend (that's kart hire, prep, awning space, mechanical help when we need it, on the basis that we do the routine stuff throughout the day like tyre pressures, setup changes etc. and they fix things when they break and give advice on setup etc. if we ask), plus the £65 entry fee, plus maybe a tenner each for fuel, and a few more bits and pieces like oil, chain lube etc.. We usually camp at the track to keep costs down a bit. If you're 93kg you'd be a little over in TKM - I may be 68kg but I have to carry at least 10kg of ballast to get up to the 146kg category, so if you were going for the 152kg category you'd maybe be 10kg over, maybe a bit less. The other option is Rotax as there is a 177 weight category, but it's not run at a ton of circuits and Rotax is more expensive to run.

  8. Sort of. MSA racing is done in weight categories that you have to weight up to. In TKM Clubman there are two weight classes - one requires you plus kart to weigh 152kg (and the driver plus their helmet and suit must be at least 68kg), and one requires you plus kart to weigh 146kg and you run a restrictor on the carburettor. I'm in that class because I'm about 66kg all kitted up. So everyone is effectively equal. We just attach lead to the kart (about 9kg in my case) and run a full tank of fuel if needed to get the kart up to the weight minimum.

  10. Yeah, linkster and I used to do Covkart and I think Dudley maybe still is. It's a good place to start out and the racing is good. It's certainly pretty much the cheapest way to get involved in a series that races at multiple circuits, and also meet people in other areas of motorsport - that's how we met the people that got us into the owner-driver / MSA racing. Just don't get involved in the politics - there are quite a few people in Covkart who take it far too seriously for what it is. For whoever asked further up the thread about what linkster and I do, Dudley's right that we rent from Jade Karts. What that actually means is that there's a kart which is set up for me, has my name on the side and my seat bolted to it, and i make my own setup choices throughout the race weekend etc., so it's not like something like Club100 where you get what you're given and it's a different kart every time. It's like owning your own kart but without having to store it, prep it or get it to the circuit, or fix it when it goes wrong. For anyone that's interested in more than just corporate karting, I'd highly recommend coming down to Shenington one race weekend. We're always more than happy to show people around and talk them through what's involved, and you really can't appreciate that without seeing it.
  11. Really good weekend at Shenington - I've taken nearly half a second off my fastest ever lap time. Overall results not so great as I got tangled up in a collision in heat 2 and had to take a really long way round to get back on the track, which meant despite getting 5th (from starting 5th) in heat 3 I was only starting 14th in the final, which is also where I finished. But really pleased to have made a proper improvement in my times, that's putting me nearly pretty much half a second off the fastest guys (heat 3 my fastest lap was 45.33 lap and the fastest lap of the race was 44.76). However, EVERYTHING hurts today. I was putting a lot of effort into making sure I had really good control on the throttle, and I can feel it all the way down the back of my right leg today. And in a number of places I'm not sure if I have bruises, sore muscles, or both... YAY RACING! \o/

  13. I don't think you'll get the "squeak" out of a prokart though, that's down to the higher level of grip you get with a better kart / better tyres. Something that'll sound obvious but is surprisingly hard to get right is slow in, fast out. It took me a long time to learn that that actually means slower in than you'd think, and it feels wrong to start with, but means you'll start accelerating out of the corner earlier and so get better exit speed. Experiment with dropping more speed off under braking and see how that affects how you get out of the corners. Of course, the trick is to brake, as linkster says, as hard and fast as possible, so that you get minimal bogging down. Also, the other thing I find tricky is right foot control. You need to be progressive with it, like linkster says about braking, to make sure you're putting down the maximum available power without losing grip. Where you're seeing fast people slide in corners, they're probably not sliding under power, but just whilst braking (I know linkster says brake in a straight line, but that's only until you have the control to turn under braking ). Controlling the power isn't as much of an issue with a pro-kart as it would be with a two-stroke, but it'll still make a difference if you're not just stamping straight down on the gas as soon as you're done braking. Incidentally, the reason a pro-kart bogs down is mainly down to the centrifugal clutch. They're pretty basic, but essentially (and sorry for the crapness of my explanation) there's an internal cylinder connected to the engine, which expands under centrifugal force, and at a certain RPM has expanded enough to connect to the external cylinder on the axle. So when you take your foot off the gas to brake, if the RPM drops far enough, it disconnects the engine from the axle, and you have to get the RPM to build back up again before there is any power to the wheels at all. If you can keep the RPM up, by braking for a shorter period of time, or keeping a bit of gas on then you should get less bogging.
  14. Also bear in mind it'll take you the best part of a season to learn to drive a TKM really well on ONE track...
