1 Vs 100

I can't be bothered to check if this is covered in another thread because it could be in one of many. There doesn't seem to be a topic though so here we go.

The Beta for 1 Vs 100 has gone live for those with Canadian gold live accounts, it's that Microsoft quiz thing they said something about last year at E3. Apparently it launches this spring, so it must be due really soon.

Anyway, here's how it works.

You join the game, go into a group of 4 and then for each round are given a role. There are three roles:

The One: The main competitor
The Mob: 100 people who compete against The One
Crowd: Playing just for fun.

Most of the questions are pop culture trivia and were pretty easy. They're multiple choice and are answered by pressing X, A or B.

The structure is this:

The One answers questions to win Microsoft Points. They do this by answering questions that The Mob cannot. Members of The Mob are eliminated when they get a question wrong. Every 10 (I think) members of The Mob that are eliminated pushes The One into the next prize bracket. We didn't see anyone get to the top tier but we did see people who would win 4000+ points relatively easily (no prizes on the Beta).

After a couple of questions The One is asked if they want to carry on or take the points they've won.

If The One gets a question wrong everyone left in The Mob gets a Live Arcade Game and a share of the points The One had amassed up to that point. It was unclear if it was ANY game or not, the prize reveal merely said "Live Arcade Game" and "x points"

Everyone in either The Mob or The Crowd gets to see what 3 other people are scoring in the questions. More points are earnt for answering questions correctly quickly. If The One takes the 'Money' (MS Points), thereby ending the game, the top 3 scoring members of... Actually I'm not sure if it was the top 3 from the Mob or from The Audience, or even both... anyway, the people with the top 3 scores get to win a game too.

Rounds are pretty quick and between rounds you get adverts shown on a little screen in the crowd. The presenter might talk about a round that just occurred. It's pretty cheesy stuff but we got a couple of awkward laughs from what was said. There were some teething troubles with timing, but I guess that's what the Beta's for.

The games occur at a set time (7pm Canadian time, so I'd expect that sort of time when it's launched here) and we played for about an hour and a half last night. Rounds aren't very long, the longest one was definitely less than ten minutes and people seemed to be dropping in and out when they felt like it.

I thought it was pretty good, I was in The Mob for one game but my friend was audience on every game. Even playing in the audience and comparing scores with a friend was good enough fun though. At a sensible time (7pm Canadian Time is 3am UK time) when more people could get on I think it'd be even better, with or without the potential winnings. I think it'd work really well as a party game or as a game over live. The only downfall is that everyone needs a Gold Sub, I don't think guests are allowed. I guess it'd work fine with a few people working as a team on one account though, but they'd probably have to make the questions a bit tougher to make that really satisfying.

Anyway, there are more games between now and the 28th May if you're curious enough to stay up late to try it (some seem to be at midnight UK time too) and it's easy to set up a Canadian Live Account.

I think they've done something pretty cool, the ads aren't very annoying (they were all pretty short Xbox ones last night, not sure if as placeholders it means that the real ad breaks will be longer or not) and if it means they can justify the cost of points and live games as prizes then I think that's fair enough.

It seems there is not much discussion here about iPhone games so in a similar style to the PS3 owners thread, we find ourselves reading one right now.

With the exception of Rolando and Bejeweled 2 the game I've played most on mine is Cube Runner. This is not only free but perfectly suits the 'few minutes spare' situation that presents itself so often. Basically you just tilt the phone to move your ship, get high scores and avoid shit. Simple graphics and gameplay, great game.

Oh, my Lord. Major league excitement ahoy.

QUOTE

MTV, Apple Corps and Harmonix have announced that they are collaborating on "a brand new videogame featuring the music of the iconic Beatles".

Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos said the game was a "dream project", and that it will be a "new, full-blown custom game title production built from the ground up".

"We want to take players on an experiential journey through the band's history," he said. It was later added that this is the exclusive Beatles tie up for music games.

MTV Networks president Van Toffler said, "We're going to provide the ultimate platform for new generations of fans to start their own love affair with the Beatles".

He said the game has the blessing of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. He added that Giles Martin is doing music production - the son of George Martin.

Toffler said we should "stay tuned for details over the coming months".

During a Q&A following the announcement, we were told "this will not be a Rock Band title, this is going to be a custom title dedicated for the Beatles", and that the game will be out for "holiday of next year", i.e. Christmas 2009.

"Interoperability with Rock Band is something we're not ready to talk about yet," Alex Rigopulos said in response to a question about DLC possibilities.

Jeff Jones, CEO of Apple Corps, added that the Beatles game would span the entire run of Beatles music; Rigopulos said that "there will of course be interactive performance of the Beatles music", and that there will be new gameplay elements too.

"The thing that we're trying to keep to is for people to play the songs as though they're playing the originals. So we will be adhering to the original mixes my father and the Beatles did, and trying to preserve the sound quality as much as possible," Giles Martin said.

"A visual exploration of the Beatles' imagery is a big part of this project," Rigopulos said. "With apologies...there's very little that we're ready to say about the game itself."

Rigopulos said that peripherals that worked with other games - i.e. Guitar Hero - would work with the Beatles game to the same degree they do with Rock Band.

More as they say it.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=274302

Wowsers.

After some discussion in AnF I have decided to give this a go. If you want to discuss where to get a game, where you are getting a game, special editions, special pre-order bonuses etc. then please do it here as not to clog up the game threads.

Similarly if you are excited about getting a certain game or having it dispatched post here.

Feel free to add rllmuk affiliated links in here to the pre-order places and special pre-order bonusses etc.

If I can I will update the OP with the big games of the moment and links to where people are getting their pre-orders.

The intention is to try and keep the game threads focussed on the game discussion.

Pre-order Priorities (I will update this further in future)

"I want it early, I don't care how much I have to spend"

From feedback, GAME seem to currently be the most consistent for Thursday deliveries. Amazon can sometimes have very good pre-order prices many months before release and sometimes closer to the time too.

"I don't want to have to sign for my game"

Shopto are the only store that I know of that send their stuff by signed for delivery.
So anyone played this yet? I downloaded the demo earlier today and it's a brilliantly simple little strategy game.

You play a space station tycoon that is tasked with making various space stations profitable. You do this by constructing small businesses starting with lemonade stand's (apparently even alien's love lemonade) and newsagents and eventually branch out into building more expensive and exotic businesses like spy training centres.

There's a few different modes of play but the one featured in the demo is the adventure mode which charges you with fulfilling certain objectives within a time limit (usually build certain structures and earn a certain amount of money).

Anyway, it's a nice little game and the demo only clocks in at around 20 meg so should only take a minute or so to download.

Serious Sam HD! XBLA - (NOT) this summer

Majesco has told Eurogamer that Serious Sam will return this summer on Xbox Live Arcade.

Late summer, specifically, for 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40).

Dubbed Serious Sam HD, the game will re-imagine The First Encounter, and be created by original developer Croteam.

The chaotic first-person shooter, where enemies spawn and overwhelm from every angle, will return with online co-op for four friends. The surreal Egyptian setting will be spread across 12 levels, and we're promised dazzling, revamped visuals.

The charm of Serious Sam, which first appeared on PC in 2001, forms around controlling the swarms of baddies that are triggered when collecting ammo or reaching a new areas. There are bulls that charge, headless baddies that blow-up, ranged attackers, skeletal horse monsters and enormous bosses.

Sam's arsenal is as over-the-top as the situation, but deciding what to use and what to kill while dodging and scrapping is another matter. It's brilliant.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/croteam-...us-sam-for-xbla

omgomgomgomg I was going to post this in the xbla arcade thread, but since it's around the corner, I think it deserves it's own.

XBLA this summer is fucking amazing.

I've been fortunate that my launch system has provided me with countless hours of enjoyment.

that is, until today.

I turned it on for a quick round of worms and it froze while the host was selecting the map settings. when I went to restart it, I was greeted with the infamous three red quadrants. the power supply seems fine (orange light in stand-by mode, green when I power up the system), however after going through the motions, it appears that I have to whisk my system off to microsoft for repairs (at my cost no less).

is it just me, or is anyone else a bit miffed that knowing full well that they had a problem with their launch systems, that a year later (and just out of warranty) your 400usd system costs almost half that for to get it serviced to known issues? (and something that you really shouldn't be charged for).

additionally, of the people here who are running launch systems; is your system still running fine, or have you had to have it serviced or replaced? (I would have made this a poll, but I no longer see the option to create one).
