Leaked E3 MS/Sony info from CBOAT-neogaf

Maybe not too surprising if Activision aren't so keen on the DRM, they never used online passes and their strategy is for huge super-mass-market cash cows like CoD and Skylanders, which bring in sums EA and Ubisoft can only dream of. They don't need it and it probably only limits the audience for those games.

Unless there's some huge market of pre-owned skylander toys I was unaware of?

I probably shouldn't bother with the internet for the rest of the week.

Serious question: does it even matter to you if the worst case scenario for the Xbox One turns out to be true if there are new Forza games to be had? Or is there a theoretical point at which you say "fuck it, not even Forza is worth this shit, Gran Turismo here I come"?

There is indeed a massive market for pre-owned skylanders

It all depends on what they've done with Forza. Right now I don't care how popular Sony are with everyone else. I'd have to be dragged kicking and screaming back to those shysters, I get that Sony are apparently saying all the right things but I really don't trust a word they say and they're lack of talk about the issues that are getting MS in the sh1t this week speaks volumes.

I think I'd rather just quit playing games and take up crosswords or something.

Sony's silence is deafening. I hope they reveal their true plans for drm in their E3 conferene but if I was them I would stay silent for as long as possible to keep the goodwill going.

Yeah as good as Sony is looking right now we still don't know enough about their plans just yet. They fucked up bad with the PS3 before afterall (at launch anyway) so let's just wait and see.

I thought about that and I kinda might, especially with all those wonderful looking indie games I haven't played before like To The Moon and Thomas Was Alone and Kentucky Route Zero. Plus I've already bought myself a modest Steam games collection in their sales over the years despite having nothing to actually play the games on.

Do you have the option of joining controller-only servers for Battlefield and stuff though? I wouldn't want to play against mouse and keyboard types.

Ffs, I read through that first part only to then notice a translation.

Me too!

And will they really know who he is by spelling correctly?

I have to admit, I'm only here for one thing:

3. Be nice to Major Nelson, he has a job. Like Al Snow. (who?)

Who wants to talk about

? Look within:

Al Snow's a wrestler for WWF/E, and at some point was a trainer in the company. He was known for being part of the J.O.B. Squad, a parody faction based around Talent Enhancement, aka. Jobbing.

Basically, there's lower-paid staff in wrestling companies who are there just to lose to upcoming talent, either through rivalries with newcomers or from developing a winning streak against others and then lose to someone to make them look better (known as a push).

Layman's terms: CBOAT is asking for calm from NeoGAF after Major Nelson flat out denied his/her claims regarding eSRAM gains and caused GAF members to lose their shit. At the end of the day, Larry's there to make the company look better than it probably is behind the scenes and get paid for it, you don't need to rag on the guy.

As for the rumours: I'm quite surprised if Microsoft really was the company that forwarded the DRM solution to the Publishers - Given the amount of heat that publishers have been giving to used game sales over the last few years, I really can't see this being a one-way street. Either way though, it's here, and I don't like/want it.

I can't even imagine how the DRM is going to get 'Worse'. The only way it could is to put the cloud functionality - that will be pushed for most games - behind the X-Box Live Gold paywall. And I don't think Microsoft are that daft, surely?

Finally, I think we've all learnt by now about listening to exclusivity deals very carefully during this generation, and even then take it with a very liberal pinch of salt. We're still at a point in the industry where costs are high enough that even announcing console exclusivity will probably end up being on a time limit. If it's not in-house, you can bet count that it'll be multi-platform most of the time. 'Exclusive Content' is practically a death knell for true exclusivity, unless you really want that pre-order map pack.

MS will have been talking to the publishers about this the entire current gen. Then they will have come up with a proposal for how to use tech to solve the second hand games problem and taken it to the big three. It'll be pretty funny if the MS did an Apple (Ebooks) and colluded in order to price fix and the publishers then used that to force Sony to do the same thing. Because that worked really well in ebook land :)

Totally agree with this. If ever flustered by a statement of exclusivity for one platform or another, take a deep breath, step away from the computer, and think about it calmly for a minute. If it's a third party developer, the platform owner will have to have stumped up an obscene amount of cash to get a permanent exclusive. It's almost certainly a timed exclusive, where timed can only be a few months otherwise the buzz has gone from the game's (very expensive) marketing, and there will be something better coming along anyway. Exclusive DLC is fine, and platform-specific features such as Kinect integration (or waggle, or whatever, just don't combine "waggle and Kinect" I don't want to see that) should be expected.

Each platform will have its own first party and platform-funded third party exclusives, and that's why so many of us ended up owning one of each of the previous generations' consoles. However, this time round it looks like the platforms are going in very different directions, so it's a matter of personal taste whether the style of game on Xbox One, PS4, or Wii U, is your cup of tea.

There's a lot of third party 360 exclusives though. More than I thought, anyway. To pick out just a few from that list:

  • Chromehounds
  • Bullet Witch
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Frontlines
  • Left 4 Dead 1/2
  • Minecraft
  • Saints Row

Did Microsoft pay big money for all of those? Seems unlikely to me.

I think it was early/mid cycle for 360 when Microsoft decided to raid their piggy bank and secure a whole bunch of XBLA and third party titles. I'm guessing they spent quite a lot of money doing it, and it worked well. In my post above I should have noted that I was referring to third party AAA exclusives being very expensive -- what I was trying to get at was that if a developer/publisher such as EA was doing a AAA title then getting it as exclusive on Xbox would require a very large pile of cash just due to the investment being made by the developer, and the artificial limitation on addressable market by making it platform exclusive.

Of the list you note above, there's probably only a few that may have cost significant money, I agree.

I think some cash would have been given, but I I believe poor PS3 sales and press (and Gabe!) plus the difficulty in programming it didn't help matters either. It's going to cost them a hell of a lot more this time, if PS4 hits the ground running and both consoles do well from the start, which is probably where the 'no-mention' rumour is coming in - they're buying word-of-mouth exclusivity. We saw that last gen though with some of the big names been touted as MIcrosoft exclusives because MS paid for the advert.

I'd also think that (admittedly, without really looking into it) you could chalk up early exclusivity with PS3's dire straits - The hardware was late, the architecture was ragged on by developers, and it was just a losing cause all round in comparison to the 360's development framework. I still remember reading up the absolute drubbing that Valve was giving to Sony in regards to getting The Orange Box working on the system, and being glad that I had a 360 so these games can actually happen without being a buggy mess.

Although I would chalk up Minecraft as a pure moneyhat, certainly. (although I've still got my suspicions about that 'Big' Vita title to be announced at E3)

EDIT: Like what Steev said! a bit late, there.

H.H.H..H.HOLY Shit!

Superdae has just dumped 1.7 TBYTES of gaming secrets on the net. It was originally his insurance against prosecution from MS for hacking them, but since it's all gone a bit Pete Tong and he's actually been pinned with child porn charges, he's evidently decided to strike out.

I wonder what the hell sort of info is in those files....

It's his child porn dump.

Something makes me suspect that list is false (or some of it is) - the Prince of Persia reboot. Pretty sure the previous reboot did quite poorly and the 3D series has never been the biggest moneyspinner despite critical success (I think the second one, i.e. the infamous "emo prince" one was the most successful). I'm certain I read somewhere a while ago that Ubi had "progressed" the series into Assassin's Creed and were leaving Prince of Persia behind for the forseeable future. Most of the other stuff are just things all of us either already know (the "exclusives" thing) or could guess, and pretend we "knew" when it came to pass (like the Mirror's Edge) thing.

One of the DRM plans is worse than you imagine. Can't get enough evidence to say more; people are scared for their jobs.

Damn, what the hell could that be. Ballmer comes over and sweats on anyone who tries to boot up a game without being a member of Live.

1.7 TB would be a lot of child porn. They're quite small.

Ballmer's 'tongue-out' picture is added to the top-right corner of your screen, every hour you don't check in it gets bigger. Eventually Ballmer fills the screen and you get a phonecall from PRISM Microsoft to ask what you're up to.

Don't wanna read too much into this, but if DRM is a Microsoft initiative, maybe Sony aren't under quite as much pressure to deliver a DRM solution as we initially thought.
