How similar is it to Forbidden Island and Flash Point? I want something different, but not *too* far away from it, if you see what I mean - I don't want to terrify her with strange new concepts!

It shares a lot of similarities with Forbidden Island, as it's by the same designer so I would think your missus would be fine with it. If you really want to see how much she loves you though: Arkham Horror! :D

Castle Panic is a great co op game.

It has simple rules, doesn't take long to play and has a V's variant - one player taking the role of defender and the other the attacker.

You know the mechanism when the waters rise in Forbidden Planet? It's the same mechanic when you pull an epidemic card in Pandemic. Players also get a number of actions like they do in Forbidden Island although the specifics are different enough to make a different game.

I've never played the 2004 version but I love the 2010 version. From what I understand, it was a complete re-design from the ground up. A lot of people have said that it's the computer game... but translated very well into a board game, and I agree. There's a lot to take in at first but thankfully the manual's written really well and like everything else, once you get a feel for it, it gets much easier.

There are four win conditions: Military (defeat your enemy's capital), Cultural, Economic and Technological. Each of them are based off of the Technology tree (it's a pyramid in this version) which brings them all together, so that the game doesn't feel fiddly. It's easy to keep track of what you need to do to achieve your preferred victory type which allows you to focus on developing your strategies and executing your tactics.

There are a LOT of bits in that box and you pretty much use every one of them in a game. You'll easily lose four hours when you play your first game but you'll be able to get it down to about two hours once you get familiar.


Crap, kinda feared that answer... Oh well as the wrapping seems to have somehow come off a copy while I was looking at it, I guess I have to buy this now... :)

Space Alert is not an easy game to introduce to others and you really need the full compliment of players to make it work. 5 or 6 I can't remember.

I have a question for anyone who's played the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game. It didn't seem clear in the rules and I don't have them to hand to go back and check.

When you get attacked by an enemy, you can choose to either defend or not defend. If you don't defend all damage goes through to the character. If you do defend, your character becomes blocks damage but becomes exhausted. Because your character is now exhausted, does that mean he can't counter attack the enemy? If so does that mean you need to let a character be attacked if you want to attack with them? That, coupled with the fact that enemies always attack first seems pretty brutal.

It seemed like a fairy shoddy rulebook to be honest. Annoying mistake near the start when it tells you to build the Mirkwood Quest deck. It tells you the wrong card numbers to include, one of which is from a completely different quest.

Yeah, the defending character becomes exhausted and can't attack. You need to use other characters to then attack. Just played Apples to Apples for the first time last night and it was fantastic. But I can't seem to find anywhere who has it in stock in the UK. Does anyone know where I could get it? I'd be happy with either the UK or the US version to be honest.

This makes sense, it's definitely more advantageous to take three heroes than one or two. The extra threat is more than offset by having a third hero.

That's where the game's slightly unfair. The creature gets to attack first and it also gets to defend. I can't think of a thematic reason for this!

Can anyone recommend some good co op games for Mrs Fudge and myself? Nothing too heavy (yet...), she enjoys Forbidden Island and Flash Point, so I don't want to get anything TOO similar to those...

Journey down the Anduin is a completely different kettle of fish and to be honest, this is where you should start looking into deck building. I'm rubbish at building so I tend to copy other builds and then "tweak" things (add/swap other cards). Of course, you're limited by the amount of cards you own but that doesn't mean you can't beat all of the scenarios in the core set, as long as you start thinking about custom deck building (which is where the heart of the game lies, IMO)

Have a look at this thread which suggests a couple of custom deck builds with a core set. The strategy folder in the LotR forum on Board Game Geek is pretty full of useful info and it won't take long for you to get your head around core concepts such as comboing cards.

The general concensus seems to be that you should take your time getting through each scenario, playing them up to (and more than) a dozen times each. To be honest, playing the same scenario over and over is the best way to learn how to use the cards in your deck effectively. Once you have your current build down tight, it's then time to break out the next scenario and a new deck build.

And if you ever build a single deck that can beat ALL of the scenarios, you happen to be better than 99.99% of the rest of us! :)

Been playing Friday recently and I've finally gotten to the Pirate challenge. I couldn't find a definitive answer on how to use your deck for the final fight. Do you carry on as you normally would and when you run out of cards add in an ageing card and reshuffle etc. or do you just draw until your hand is exhausted? Do you get to re-shuffle for the second pirate?

I re-shuffled after adding in an aging card. Pirate card said I could draw ten cards, first card I drew was the aging card telling me to 'stop'. :mellow:

Sleeving cards. I've got some normal ones, smaller ones and some inbetween ones. I liked the one Michael had on Ace Of Spies at the UKGE (ultra pros?) but anywhere do these things cost effectively? Would like to take care of mine in time.

Do you get the premium Mayday ones, Mike? The label says "125% Thicker!"? I use them, but my preference is the Ultra-Pro Deck Protector sleeves.

What were the orange ones you had on the cards at the expo dude? I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to shuffle.

Cheers chap, just bought some from FP in Stoke. Interested to hear what you think of the mayday ones - they're cheap on eBay or from Boardgameextras in comparison. I could do out all of the LotR and W:I core sets for 10.

Ultra Pro or Dragon Shield are the ones I hear spoken highly about. I tend to use Ultra Pro as they shuffle really nicely.

Legion sleeves are also supposed to be good but aren't widely distributed in the UK.

After sleeving TtR: The Card Game, it's not much good for games where you need piles, so I've had to make tuck boxes which turned out to be a bit small so HARUMPH.

I meant to say that actually, sleeving is all well and good but it can make them not fit in the boxes and if you're stacking lots of them they can be unwieldy. I just leave mine. If they get wrecked they get wrecked, it means they've been played with and loved. It's not like playing a CCG where some cards go for $80 or something.
