Is "Game" finished?

Ha. I'd already 1000gamerpoint'ed street fighter 4 and super, and clocked up combined hours on them totalling 2400 hours or so. I just keep giving copies to people and re-buying it to spread the enthusiasm. No one else cares.

And yet I don't have a copy.

bad stuff

I hope if they do go under you can find a better job soon. I don't mean to be horrible or antagonistic, but have you considered looking elsewhere for management opportunities...?

Game/Station staff it's time to tart up those CV's and start looking for jobs. NOW. Don't think 'it'll get better in a few weeks' because it never does.

I played the Vita today in Gamestation. In the same way that 3DS Zelda looked just like I remembered the N64 version was, the Vita looked like an ugly PSP and Wipeout didn't look any more impressive than Ridge Racer on PSP.

I KNOW this is rose tinted spectacles, but like Choddo says, I really don't see any interest in it. There's loads of gamers where I work and we had a fair bit of chat about the 3DS before launch, but no-ones mentioned the Vita once.

and obviously the pre-orders are dead as soon as this news hits the wider press. Nobody will give deposits to a company they think is about to tank.

Anyone fancy combining this with the other "Game is doomed" thread to create a full-on Game discussion spectacular?

The Vita is of interest because its the first handheld that actually stands close to a current gen TV console experience, its got the inputs, its got the power and for those of us who have limited main screen time due to family commitments its potentially huge. Its also got a new Uncharted game which to be honest is enough to sell it to me.

And those are seriously rose tinted specs you have - I've yet to see a Vita in the flesh but Zelda on the 3DS looks like how you remember the N64 version - if you put the original game on now you realise exactly how much things have moved on in the last 8 years....

Back on topic though the Vita has no chance of saving Game - its the wrong time of year and the market is niche. I don't think they'll make it to the 720/PS4/WiiU launches which is what they really need to save themselves...

Eurogamer, with their EA quote, appear to be going for the kill.

Not had a chance to fully to read up on this, but as a store manager at Gamestation, our wages didn't go through first thing on the 31st (we get paid on the last day of each month).

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Good luck man. Start looking for something else now. That's shocking.

I reckon 2013 will see the end of WH Smith as the demand for half price chocolate dries up.

Interestingly they are doing really well.

and if the company goes under I would not bet on the adminstrators giving a fair redundency or sorting out your last paycheck in a hurry.

Rick Strider (the guy that brought that Game shares) is on NeoGAF for those intrested.

A quick thought, apart from Morrisons the supermarkets are terrible at prices for new releases. Just see how much a copy of UC3 costs you in Asda or Tesco. Normally its at least as much as Game. The days of them doing great prices on games are over apart from the odd release (eg, Skyrim at Sainsburys).

If Game and HMV do go they will probably just sell at RRP for everything.

No they wont, they'll be competing with each other. Someone else will fill the GAME void anyway, hopefully with a bit more class. I fucking hate GAME, hope it plays out and Rick whatshisface loses his 600 quid.

Because what always happens when the leading national chain for a specialised market goes under is a new player moves in and creates a fresh brand? Give over.

If GAME go bump you'll have a number of small chains and individual indies popping up to fill the void but nothing more. You and I will have to go to cash converters, the intense price competition will stop, and bargains will be a thing of the past.

As their international brethren go bump publishers and hardware manufacturers will move to digital distribution and second hand sales will be more likely to be stomped on.

It's ok if Music box go under, they'll be replaced.

It's ok if Zavvi go under, they'll be replaced.

It's ok if FOPP go under, they'll be replaced.

It's ok if Silverscreen go under, they'll be replaced.

etc.

I don't think GAME is being run especially well but note the footnote of their terrible mid-year results was that it was still better than the overall market. It's not an attractive one.

I think there's a few years left in retail yet, it just needs to be done right. GAME just have too much bad blood surrounding them, everyones been suckered by them at least once. Someone with half a brain somewhere will realise they can create a good shopping experience by basically just doing the opposite of what GAME did for all those years. Decent prices and no harassment would do it.

Imagine being the poor sod in charge of Game's Twitter today, having to keep a virtual rictus grin in place, dealing with a flood of "But what about my pre-orders?" whilst uploading your CV to monster.co.uk in another window..

I know that person. I don't envy them. :(

That twitter feed is horrendous, I imagine everytime the author tweets, he suffers the same fate as in SOTC when you down a colossus.

Not being able to swap games will have a big impact on my purchasing. I paid a total of about 5 pounds cash for Mario 3DS and Zelda Skyward Sword. I simply wouldn't have had the money to buy them at release had I not been able to trade in games.

Just look at the price of major game downloads on your Xbox and PS3 to get an indication of where this is going.

Higher prices for us, higher margins for them and no market that can pressure the prices.

Eh? You can trade games anywhere now, supermarkets do it. GAME's demise will only intensify the competition for trade-ins. Your last sentence doesnt even make sense.

What other games shops are left? Chips? How are they doing?

In my head the fall of Game will be a time for independents to shine, but I know nothing of the retail world so I'm sure this isn't possible.

I think that's a bit unfair. The tone of GAME's twitter suits the brand, they often try to do exclusive competitions and give initial heads-ups on offers through it, and I know the person who mans it cares about solving any customer issues they can that come to them directly through twitter. It's not an easy job - especially with the state the company is in at the moment.

Possibly but whats your point? You can still swap games..you have a cex and supermarkets up your way dont you?

Just the fact that a grown adult has to tweet this nonsense and ignore his companies troubles. Ive sympathy for the guy, just corporate twitter accounts always come across as really rubbish.

I certainly don't know of any supermarkets that allow me to swap... and supermarkets offer a very narrow range of games and are also not discounting as much as they used to either.

And today it's nothing but "get more VITA pre-orders!", and "why are stores not pushing for memory card deposits for the VITA?!" from the regional managers, when everyone on the fucking internet is thing about cancelling the pre-orders that they have with this company.

Out of touch with reality.

I walked past the Middlesbrough branch at 7:30 last night and it was full of staff having a meeting. They were all stood around laughing, which didn't make a lot of sense to me because I'd read the news on the gaming websites and that was all bad news.

I guess the staff were actually been told "Everything is fine! Sell more Vitas!"
