After umm and ahhing over a few different projects, included but not limited to, Moby Dick, Wanted 2 and a third Nightwatch film, director Timur Bekmambetov has finally chosen Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as his next go project. He's actually been signed for a while but the main cast is just being filled out now so I figured it was as good a time as any to start a topic.

The story is based on the mash up novel of the same name, written by the same guy who wrote Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The story follows a young Lincoln as he discovers from his father that vampires are very real. When he discovers his own mother was given vampire blood, he vows to hunt them down one by one.

When Lincoln is eleven years old, he learns from his father Thomas Lincoln that vampires are in fact real creatures. Thomas explains to his son that a vampire killed Abraham's grandfather (also named Abraham Lincoln) in 1786. Young Abraham is also shocked to learn that his beloved mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln succumbed not to milk sickness but rather to being given a "fool's dose" of vampire blood, the result of Thomas's failure to repay a debt. Lincoln vows in his diary to kill as many vampires as he can. A year later he lures the vampire responsible for his mother's death to the family farm and manages to kill it with a homemade stake.

And that's just the start. At one point Tim Burton was attached to direct but he's now on producer duties instead. The cast have begun to fill out with some of the leads cast - From /film

Guess there are no hard feelings between Fox and Benjamin Walker, who last year walked away from the role of Beast in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. The studio has just signed the actor to be Abraham Lincoln in Timur Bekmambetov‘s upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Then today -

The next two actors has been added to one of our most anticipated movies currently in pre-production that’s not based on a comic book character. Anthony Mackie, star of The Hurt Locker, 8 Mile and the upcoming The Adjustment Bureau, and Dominic Cooper, star of Captain America: The First Avenger, An Education and Mamma Mia have signed on to co-star in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, produced by Tim Burton and starting Benjamin Walker as Lincoln. Mackie will play a character named Will, who is most likely William Seward, Lincoln’s best friend in the book and a fellow vampire hunter. In real life, Seward was Lincoln’s Secretary of State and white but Mackie will surely be a bit more of a bad ass. Cooper is playing Henry Sturges, a fictional character who serves as Lincoln’s vampire-killing mentor. Read more after the jump.

Filming should be about to ramp up for a 2012 release.

So what style is this being played as? Outright horror/thriller or spoof or comedy? Love the first posters.

From last year... This a trailer for the book or the film? As it looks a bit like low budget piss if it's the film...

“It’s told through the structure of Lincoln’s actual life. You not only see these huge fight scenes and great moments of drama, but you get sort of the greatest hits of Lincoln’s life, from the mysterious death of his mother through the Gettysburg address,” says Walker. “You get a portrait of this man, as well as a thriller.”

Lincoln has journeyed to Louisiana to rescue a friend — a freed black man named William Johnson (The Hurt Locker‘s Anthony Mackie), who has been captured by a cabal of Southern vampires.

Vampires like the idea of slavery because, for them, it turns plantations into livestock farms. If certain groups of human beings are considered property, then the Confederacy is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for bloodsuckers looking to feed without consequence.

Not sure what I was expecting to be honest (maybe a campy/horror comedy) but that looks pretty damn good.

I've found Bekmambetov's other films to be pretty hit or miss but one thing you can say is that he pulls out some great special effects and action scenes.

Is there an embargo on reviews? Only 2 days until opening and there appears to be nothing out there.

It might well be, nothing on Rotten Tomatoes and I can't recall seeing places like Ain't It Cool having anything either. That's not a good sign - but hopefully it IS screening for critics at some point this week, as opposed to the studio keeping them well away.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I'm getting bored of all this highly stylized, slo-mo, spinning around off walls bullshit. In a way, I see it as a lack of confidence on the part of the director. They seem scared to make a fantasy film with some sort of grounding in reality. I know the argument will be, "Dude! It's fucking Abe Lincoln killing vamps! What do you expect?"

What do I expect? I expect to believe in it. And not be taken out of it by a director trying to show off, or be cool. For me, all the showy stuff just doesn't work in the context of the older setting.
