AMC is close to finalizing one of the richest development deals ever with Frank Darabont to write and direct a series adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series "The Walking Dead," written by Robert Kirkman.

Variety says that Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion are also on board to executive produce.

The story is set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live.

AMC Senior Vice President of Programming Joel Stillerman said the series will stay faithful to the tone of the original novels. "This is not about zombies popping out of closets. This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in 'Walking Dead') is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way."
I haven't read the comics but the synopsis over on Wiki has me interested.

Always thought a TV series would be a better fit for the WD. The best thing about the comic is the changes in the characters as they're exposed to such horrific situations over a prolonged period of time, a 2 hour movie just ain't gonna capture that. Still, having Darabont on board is a good thing, he adapted The Mist right?

EDIT:

The Walking Dead is one of the worst comics I've read in recent memory; it's like a zombie soap opera, scripted by people who've never heard how real people talk. It's hopelessly derivative of pretty much every zombie film ever anyway, so fuck knows what they're hoping to gain by filming it.

Also, zombie films are played out.

I was so enraged by my hatred for TWD that I didn't even read the news story properly.

This could actually be alright, if they change all the dialogue and the plot and the characters.

Darabont is perfect for this shit.

The Walking Dead is shit, and if this sticks too closely to it and also ends up shit it'll be a real wasted opportunity, as a TV series is potentially the perfect format for telling a good zombie story.

I almost hope it doesn't stick to the story, because if it did it would be the most depressing series imaginable. Plus they wouldn't be able to shoot most of it for being waaay too offensive to human beings.

There are collected editions and big deluxe editions but it's like a fucking puzzle if you don't stick to one or the other.

Try amazon.

EDIT - Compedium is issues 1-49 I believe, so yeah, it's a great place to start. If you're looking to eventually move to the monthly ish you could then bridge the gap with one or two trades - think we're up to about issue 63 now, although I'm sure someone will confirm...

Anyway...

Owen Wilson for main character, I predict, alongside prediction this one'll never make it to the screen, sadly.

Saying the Walking Dead is shit is tantamount to admitting you're an idiot. Or at least devoid of good taste

Aaron Eckhard could make a good Rick Grimes. He has a decent range and looks the part.

9/10 Walking Dead fans preferred Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake to the original, and would list "Heroes" in their top ten TV shows of all time. :)

No but seriously, I went into TWD with high hopes off the back of all the internet buzz it had generated and it left me cold. Maybe it would never have lived up to the hype, but like K says Kirkman is absolutely lousy with dialogue, and that killed the whole thing for me. Hopefully he won't be too involved with the writing on this.

I can see where the haters are coming from, the dialogue is hokey but there is loads to like though, most characters are likable enough and the sense of zombie threat is almost plapable at times thanks to the Adlard art. The sheer amount of 'holy shit, he didn't really just do that' moments that Kirkman elicits in the later issues have kept me coming back for more. Volume 10 is out this week and I'm gonna devour it.

To call it shit though is just not cricket and I hate Zack Cocking Snyder and Heroes

AMC really are the new hotness. Mad Men, Breaking Bad and now this, makes up for a few weak years for HBO post Sopranos and The Wire.

That said HBO look to be making up for that in style this year with Treme, The Pacific, Boardwalk Empire and maybe even Game of Thrones.

Woohoo :D

As said earlier, the walking dead dialogue is a little bit shit in places. But that's not what it's about at all for me, I regularly find comic book dialogue to be stilted and laughable anyway. At least TWD is fairly economical with its words, I'm happy for the characters to remain fairly undeveloped as the enjoyment comes from discovering how their situation develops more than how they react to it.

Supposedly, these two are in the running for Rick Grimes.
