Merry Christmas!

Green Light for New Judge Dredd Movie
Source: 2000ADOnline.com
December 20, 2008

Rebellion and 2000 AD have announced that a new Judge Dredd movie is in development.

Together with DNA Films, the movie production company behind such films as Danny Boyle's Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, Judge Dredd will go into production in 2009.

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said, "We can't give away too many details at this point, but we're looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen."

Can he keep the helmet on this time?

Seriously though, there're so many possibilities for great Dredd movies. Hopefully they'll be able to make the right decisions.

Excellent news. I really liked the first film, despite its obvious flaws. There's certainly plenty to enjoy there; the ABC Warrior/Hammerstein, the score, the Angel Gang, Judge Hershey.

Will it have the budget it needs to make the world convincing enough?

As much as I love Statham I still think Josh Brolin would be perfect casting as Dredd.

Judge Dredd is the worst film i have ever seen, i could not even finish it at first - i had never or have never not been able to sit thru a film other than Dredd.

It can only be a better film, even a static image of Dredd for 2 hours would be a better film but i am still worried, the name just brings back horor for me !

Give me a hard 18 certificate, with Dredd as a real ball-busting asshole, and no made up shit, and I'll be happy.
Most of the stuff from the first film that was from the comic was okay, it was all the stuff they added that ruined it. And Stallone.

Not sure they can carry off the Dark Judges, it would need some very careful SFX work to avoid looking ridiculous, plus I'm just not convinced the concept would translate to screen.

I'd personally rather see an excellent multi-parter like 'The Pit' adapted to film, that's the one which springs out at me now.

Following the release of the Judge Dredd movie, a comic set in its continuity, entitled Judge Dredd: Lawman of the Future, was published, and soon featured a story introducing this continuity's version of Judge Death. He remains a death-dispensing monster from another dimension, but in this storyline, he is actually an alternate-dimension incarnation of Dredd himself, who died in the line of duty, but was supernaturally resurrected through his undying desire to dispense justice.

Lawman of the Future was aimed at a younger market. I used to read it when I was a nipper, alongside 2000 AD though. It wasn't as violent, I used to prefer the 2000 AD Dredd stories.

Going back to the Dredd film, I can't believe people are seriously suggesting Jason Statham. He hasn't got the chin for it at all.

I'd quite like to see The Pit done as a tv show. It's got the feel of a Hill Street Blues police procedural about it.

What I'd really like (but I know we're not going to get) is a proper old-fashioned Dredd, drawing on the huge amount of material in, say, the first 400 progs. I want to see Uglies, Blobs, the League of Fatties, the Palais de Boing, the Smokatorium, Resyk, mo-pads, knee-pads, massive boots, Uncle Ump, Max Normal, Call-Me-Kenneth and Walter the Robot.

Of course I'd settle for a half-decent film that doesn't mess about with the key elements of the story, but even that's probably hoping for too much...

Jason Statham as Dredd.

His schedule is jam fucking packed until 2010 though, he's in at least 10 movies due for release from now until then.

*edit: I must've been reading a parody artice, it would appear he's only in 4 until 2011.

I can't believe people are seriously suggesting Statham for the role. Bloody hell.

Brolin sounds about right, as LC says.

To be honest I was actually joking with my suggestion of Statham as Dredd, to me he is just a fucking absurd actor, however due to his perplexing ubiquity at the moment he seems like the kind of daft choice they'd go for, plus he's seems like a popular choice here!

My serious suggestion would be Samuel L Jackson as Dredd.

It needs an unknown, rather than someone who's going to want to emote, have loads of lines and take off the helmet. I'd say the guy that played Encino Man in Generation Kill.
