Only played this for a couple of hours, but I'm really liking it so far. I love the feel of it, and the game world is incredibly well realised. It really feels like a bustling city ripped straight out of the 40s. Fantastic stuff.

I haven't really got into the real 'meat' of the game though, so it could be awful from here on of course. Great first impression though.

Definitely not awful, but I'd say that when it comes to presentation and atmosphere the first third/half of the game is definitely the best part. On the other hand, the missions/shootouts are better in the later half. All in all a bit of a mixed bag but enjoyable for sure.

Good stuff. I'd also like to echo a comment from a few pages back about the driving; unlike any other 'open world' game, I've found myself really looking after the cars in this and not driving like a maniac when I don't have to. There's something very pleasing about driving around, sticking to the speed limit, obeying the traffic lights and not crashing into everything in sight ^_^ The cars don't feel so throwaway in this, for some reason.

Also just finished it; took 2 epic sittings. Didn't mean to, but couldn't pull myself away.

Brilliant setpeices, good story, ending was a bit abrupt.

Still havent finished this
Im on the last mission now and frankly gotten a bit tired of it. The lack of imagination in mission variety really does start to grate in the final 3rd. And i also wasnt exactly thrilled by the

style revelation from someone whos only in the game for a few minutes at the beginning.
All in all, i loved the setting, music, the driving, the gunplay is great, but i felt it petered out a bit too much both for story and gameplay by the ending, i think id give it a high 7.

How difficult is this game? Considering doing my first run on Hard, but if it's gonna be a right bitch then I won't bother.

Piss easy, really. You'll get blindsided and shot to bits by one guy you hadn't noticed every now and then, and there's one section in a chapter 14 warehouse that's a pain, but the rest of it is smooth sailing.

It depends how good you are at cover based shooters, of course, but if you're well acquainted with them you should have no problems. Just finished it myself on Hard today, took 2 sittings because of the game's length - not because it was particularly tough.

Finally finished it!! 7/10 from me, pushing an 8. Very good game let down by lack of ideas and a story that gets progressivley worse. Wasnt a fan of the ending at all.

I really enjoyed it tbh, even though it's not great, it was definitely a good yarn, I'd agree with a 7 or an 8 out of 10 in hindsight, loved it while playing it and almost immediately replayed it on hard which is something I very rarely do.

Although I totally appreciate people's dissappointment in lack of side quests and anything to do around the missions, it does actually benefit from it in some ways. I went into it knowing (cos of this thread) that this was the case, so wasn't annoyed by it and actually enjoyed the generally good story, much more than I did GTAIV, in retrospect. GTAIV is 'better' in other ways but I couldn't have given two shits about Niko and was continually annoyed by the phone calls and idiotic friend padding stuff that happened. OK Mafia II has padding in the way of some pretty unnecessarily long driving sections but hey-ho, I really enjoyed the radio and actually thought the driving and police recognition stuff* worked so well that I didn't mind having a bit of a cruise about. I thought that the majority of missions were generally better than most of GTAIV's, as was the story, even as incredibly cliche as it was. Somehow it worked because of it, you knew what to expect, it literally was like playing the game of numerous italian gangster movies, I was almost more surprised that there wasn't a woman that fucked it up somewhere along the line, as in Goodfellas and Casino.

It's a sort of happy medium between complete idiotic fun and japes of Saints Row2 and the almost too po-faced 'seriousness' (which doesn't fit with the crazy shit you can get up to in between missions) of GTAIV. Or maybe I was in the right frame of mind for it. Either way, it's certainly recommended, as long as you go in knowing that it's generally a linear, story driven experience, rather than a sand box you can just tit about in.
Personally, I think it's better for it too.

*If Rockstar don't use this system in the next GTA (which they should have even done with the one that was in Mafia 1, then they're just being stubborn idiots, it really works and makes SO much more sense than the far too game-like inexplicable and nonsensical police 'zone' that they currently use.

By the way, I got 35 credit at HMV trading this in the other day. Ridiculous really! It might be due to the offer on at the moment (FIFA 11 is 5 when you trade this in), in which case it only runs until the 8th.

Played this at a mate's for the first few chapters. I couldn't believe the level of detail in the world. Yes even on the crappy old 5 year old 360 I thought this looked stunning. I had to keep on looking at everything and soaking up the visuals and atmosphere. The music was incredible, like a greatest hits of gangster movies and I would just drive around for ages listening to the radio. "I would go from rags to riches." :)

It got to the stage where the game could have gotten rid of it's guns , plot, missions and characters. I would have been quite happy exploring this world if the name had been changed to "The big scuddy mag hunt."

I was lucky enough to get a new 360 for my birthday after my old one suffered the red ring for the second time and was out of warranty. I got Mafia 2 as part of the game package with the machine, and having played the demo, I wasn't that bothered about it to be honest.

But I gave it a go, and I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. Sure it's pretty linear, but to be honest, I quite like that. I sometimes found in GTA4 there was too much going on for my liking. Having already made it to the end of chapter 12, I suspect I'm going to be like some people on here in feeling that it's too short given how linear it is, but I'll give the DLC a go.

It's not perfect - it relies on the same trick fairly regularly, particularly when it comes to the fighting scenes (and whilst I enjoyed the storyline section of the prison, the constant punch ups got repetitive), but the setting has drawn me in. I love the old school cars, music etc.

One bit I'm not sure on is quite how much influence I have over the game. For example, having looked at the achievement list for the game, there's one for getting Leo out without being caught. The option I took ended up with me being caught, but there was no hint as to whether that option would end up with me being caught or not.

Plus there's a couple of achievements around selling cars - having stuck pretty much to the storyline, I've only sold one to each of the people in question, rather than five, and any time I went back to them, they said they had nothing for me at the moment. Is the opportunity only available at certain times in the game? Or should I be wandering off more in mission?

You do the whole car-selling thing by just driving them into the crusher or crane-lift-thing. You don't speak to the people themselves to do this. You can do it basically at any time.

The 'we have no jobs for you right now' response is probably related to cut content, unfortunately.

Cheers for the heads up Rudi. I take it they can just be any cars then, rather than them looking for specific types?

Aye, any car at all - though I think Derek only takes sports cars or something, I've not actually ever taken cars to him except for the mission. The crusher is fine with whatever car you bring.

DLC - Joe's Adventure - coming Nov 23rd, probably 800msp.

Mafia II Joe's Adventures DLC add-on will be available on November 23rd. A price has yet to be confirmed, but we'd bet on 800 Microsoft Points, the same price as previous Mafia II DLC.

Good news. I'll need to buy some Microsoft Points first though!

I hadn't realised until yesterday that there was a special edition of Mafia 2. Anyone got it? It's only really the soundtrack that I'm interested in to be honest, but keen to hear thoughts.

I've just played the demo of this and it's totally superb. The game world is second to none and I was totally immersed from the word go.

I've just got a new 360 and this weekend I've got to choose between Halo Reach, Alan Wake and now this. But I think I'm gonna get this. The gun play is excellent.
