No, I might get one once the music bug bites me again. Lately I've been doing shit all apart from a little audio doodling though. I'm not really interested in the oscillator, but the filter might be nice.

Well I ordered one and it turned up today. Initial impressions are pretty good, though the ribbon keyboard is useless for anything other than clumsy prodding.

Not sure what I'll use the filter for, really. The noises it kicks out are is surprisingly beastly, though, considering it's such a tiny thing, but you really have to use headphones on the move or it sounds like a wasp trapped in coke can. The speaker is a bit pump.

Batteries last about eight hours, according to the manual.

That's pretty neat, got to try that out :)

On the other hand, I already have an APC40 so I'm not sure if this is going to beat that.

I could do with some (fairly cheap) studio monitor headphones, can anyone recommend some? Ideally under £80.

What do you lot think this track needs? I'm seriously thinking about making it quite a bit longer and adding some rhymes over the top, does anyone know a good MC?

Hi gang,

So since moving I am about to rebuild a small home studio set up, mainly for producing dance music in various styles. I've got my MBP 2.8ghz, 4 meg RAM, as the core, plus my external M&KB, Ableton Live 7, and Native Instruments Komplete 6, but apart from that I'm starting afresh.

Here is the gear I'm thinking of buying this month and up until Christmas:

Alesis M1 520 monitors ($200)
Novation Nocturn 25 MIDI keyboard ($200) (Comes with V Station and Bass Station VST's for free, always liked V Station back in the UK)
Samsung 23 inch LED PC Monitor ($300)
Akai APC20/40 (Can't decide which one right now) ($140 / $300)

I'm trying to budget as much as possible as I need to buy some DJ gear ASAP soon. Anyone have any comments, thoughts, recommendations on the above or similar products? I saw someone mention that had an APC40, how it is? I do put together DJ mixes in Ableton currently but the 40 looks like it would make that task a lot easier.

Anyone want to discuss VSTs as well? I'm thinking the Synlenth and the Nexus are my next two must have's.

I have an APC40, it's lovely. Both when editing or 'performing', it's a great tool. Check the various YouTube videos. One thing you might want to consider is a low latency ASIO sound interface, especially if you plan to use a lot of VSTs and effects.

Sylenth is really nice i keep thinking about buying it, but i don't need any more synths, but so tempting. Heres a really good deal going for Rapture and Dimension pro over at Cakewalk, $99 for the both download usually $450, good synths too. Lasts till the 29th Oct. Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, as I can't remember seeing any acoustic stuff in here before.

Regardless, over the course of this year, I've written and recorded a bunch of songs, some of which I have up here.

I've taken a break for a while after finishing the top 5 tracks in that link and am slowly starting to get back into recording again with this song "Anyway".

As you'll be able to tell from the quality, I'm using a standard microphone to record guitar and vocals at the same time and using Audacity to make basic tweaks once done.

Any constructive advice and/or comments would be gratefully received, I'm trying to improve and I'm unsure of what direction to take with what I'm doing.

Just put A Window on for a quick listen before bed.

I like it quite a lot. I can hear loads of other imagined things on the track though, I don't listen to much single guitar and voice stuff and to me it sounds a little plain which is a shame. I don't at all discount that it's me that's the problem as opposed to your arrangement though.

Basically, well done, put some more stuff on it. Is my take.

Do you like Counting Crows? I do and thought their instrumentation would suit this.

I've taken to doing this once a year, but I like to pick out some of the tracks I've done over the year that don't sound too shit when I go back to them and put them into a little album thing. So this year:

http://lumieres.bandcamp.com/

I think you can download it free but not sure how much of a palaver it is to do so. It needs an email or something. I should have probably looked harder at the settings and that. It's.. well, it's possibly electronica, mostly? There's also a track from when I thought I might want to sound more like Anamanguchi, and.. a cover of Ready to Go by Republica.

Thanks for pointing me to this Bastion. Think it rather undermines the solemn subject matter, but new interpretations are always worth a listen ;)

Just a quick piano thing I did in reason this evening. I think it owes a lot to 'Peace piece' by Bill Evans, which wasn't what I was aiming for at all

First time in ages I spent an evening recording some stuff... a simple quick live performance on the APC40 with Ableton Live featuring layered drum sequence on the Motif XS7 combined with drums from the Jomox Airbase, lead from the Prophet '08 and some ABL2 acid basslines.

My Christmas present was the wife finally caving into my demands for Komplete 7, it wasn't until I finished this track that I realised that pretty much everything in it is from that box, so money well spent. The leads are from Massive & Reaktor, drums are through Battery (although my own samples from various places), bassline from Massive, and there's a bit of Absynth in the pads.
