Manga

Welcome to manga. Whether you're new to the genre or a long time reader we've got recommendations and discussion for you. There's a wealth of manga out there, and many places to read it. Chances are if you're here you've already read some DragonBall, Naruto, One Piece and Bleach.

Below is a list of titles posters in this thread think are worth checking out.

Talvalin recommends:

Parasyte (the art style took some getting used to, but the story developed really well and came to what felt like a fitting end. I should really watch the films at some point)

Ranma 1/2 (okay, it's not that short and it's the same jokes over and over again, but I find it oddly hilarious)

Akira (I read the Marvel colour editions originally. Attempting to read it again in black and white in Japanese is going to melt my brain)

Planetes

The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer (recommended here - why this was never made into an anime will never cease to amaze and sadden me)

Zetman (also recommended here. I love the art to bits)

Video Girl Ai

Death Note (great until volume 7, then it all goes so so wrong)

Yotsuba& (it's ongoing but I can live with that as it's awesome)

Battle Angel Alita (yeah, the last volume was rushed but it was still an awesome series. I re-read it before mainlining as much of Last Order as I could find. Last Order is....not good)

Maison Ikkoku (despite wanting to slap Godai most of the time, and his housemates, it's a remarkably sweet series)

Gantz (uh, I still mostly enjoyed it despite the slump in the last third. Also not particularly short)

Midori's Days (absolutely insane concept but great)

Mr Jeff recommends:

Aqua + Aria. - Slice of life series about female gondoliers on Mars. Part day to day antics, part contemplations about life and part slightly supernatural. Love it.

Yokohama Kaidashi kikou - Another slice of series about androids living in the future where human society has fallen. Really gentle series but it's hard to recommend since there's no obvious hook or continuity.

Mahoraba - Yet another slice of life. About a college student living in a kooky apartment run by a high school girl who has multiple personality disorder. Starts off fairly whimsical but it has a touching end that I'm a sucker for,

Angel Densetsu - Written by the person behind the Claymore series, this is a comedy slice of life series about a high school guy who looks like a yakuza/sterotypical villain but is actually a nice person.

[Continuing series]
A Centaur's Life - Yet another slice of life series about a modern day world where humans don't exist and focuses on centaurs and various other supernatural beings instead.

Ryan recommends:

Monster (hands down my favorite Seinen manga)

Blame! (this is better than Alita imho!)

And these: Rurouni Kenshin, Touch, Ashita no Joe, Bakuman, Breaker.

I've just got up-to-date with Kingdom, it's about the forming of the first Chinese empire. Really good series, I can recommend it if you like history and fights. Although they killed off my favorite character pretty early, which sucks.

My own recommendations:

Eyeshield 21 - Great, funny, American Football series

Onepunch-Man - Comedy superhero series

Hikaru no Go - Sports maga about the boardgame Go

Hunter x Hunter (up to the introduction of 'The Ants')

Beelzebub - School life, thugs and the son of the devil in this comedy/fighting manga

Bakuman - A manga about manga creators, it's brilliant.

One Piece is awesome, I've been a bit bored of this Robin flashback though, can't wait for the fight between the Straw Hat Pirates and CP9. Its gotta happen as soon as this flashback ends!

Berserk, whenever a new volume comes "out there". Nothing comes close.

Though the non-Last Order Battle Angel Alita stuff comes damn close.

Film/TV?

Hmm.

And the last manga I bought was the translated Robot Vol.1 compilation. Well worth the money for the art.

Indeed, I have the original Vol.1, 2 and 3.

One of the artists is the artist for the manga version of Kamichu, :)

EDIT: Cover of Robot 5 can be seen here http://www.wani.com/

One piece is an amazing manga. seriously its definately one of the greats imo.
i have a theory that salu guy ( the giant in robins back story) could possibly be luffy's grandad. yes it sounds weird but if you remember when luffy first met Ao Kiji he mentioned that he remembered his grandad and how he gave him a troublesome time. And who do we see in Robin's history and the invasion on her home town? Ao Kiji. whats interesting is that in the latest one piece chapter, salu is on a rampage against the battle ships... causing trouble to the marines.
I'm also catching up and reading Hajime no Ippo. some quality fights. up to volume 63 atm and have the rest on my comp to read during the weekend.
The fight between Takamura and Brian Hawk is defiantely one of my favourite battles.

Bleach is also a quality read :(

That looks really interesting. I've not seen anything about it before. Can you get it in your local comic shop or only through obscure online orders?

Unfortunately the latter, and I think this will be one of the last print runs. The English translation is also peerless.

Just about to finish up Azumanga Daioh, waiting for the fourth vol to arrive. I seem to get along with a manga much better than the anime for some reason, not sure why. Got the first vols of Yotsuba and FLCL this morning, I'll check them out this week. And yes, I know they're all girlie choices, so sue me!

Having just watched the Gunsmith Cats OVAs and being very impressed, I'll probably get one or two of the mangas off Amazon next time I make an order.

True. I actually forgot to mention Chobits also arrived this morning as well, which is pretty girly being done by Clamp and all.

FLCL is just bloody weird. Having English text on the page breaks up the style a bit, especially since they've used a really wimpy and lightweight looking typeface. Can't be helped I guess...

Berserk - Gets better and better.

Hunter X Hunter - Used to be up there with Berserk, now really really really shit. I can understand the art going down the toilet since the author is apparently ill, but that doesn't explain the awful insect arc.

Naruto: A bit bored with it now, nothnig interesting seems to happen.

3x3 Eyes - Alongside Berserk, it's another epic masterpiece. It was recently finished (vol39) in Japan, so sooner or late we can read the whole story (english translation is upto around vol26). Can't wait.

Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star - Recently found a group doing it on the web, currently at vol22. Excellent stuff.

Can't be arsed with anything else. Though I DID buy GITS2 manga, but have yet to read.

Codger, you buying the volumes, or reading the scans for Naruto? The latest chapters have started getting pretty interesting now (after all the boring buildup stuff).

I recommend the Hajmie no Ippo manga to everyone that's even remotely interested in shonen anime/manga. It's the daddy.

Oh, and a o/\o for Berserk. Top shit.
